Now with some job security he may feel a little more inclined to further put his stamp on this team, not that he hasn't already begun that process.

Compared to his previous history of measured decisions, it seems he has gone a little haywire this summer with Cap management. We'll see come October but he has really painted himself into a corner.

IF players arent traded.. you are right.

Painted himself into a corner? I wouldn't underestimate Nonis's decision making, at least not at this point. I think he is a very capable GM. The moves he's made this off season should improve this club, and there is still plenty of time to clear up the cap room issues. I may have waited until we see how his additions work out before giving him the extension, but I think he'll come out looking pretty good before seasons end.

Yes he has painted himself into a corner - Cap-wise. And that's also why I said "we'll see come October" when he has to have the Cap controlled. In the meantime add Kadri, Fraser, Franson salaries into the mix and you have to believe our Cap room will be negligible. That's why Oct will be key - to see how he's got us out of this squeeze....

'Painted himself into a corner' generally implies that the situation is unresolvable and/or dire. I'm pretty confident that isnt the case here. Nonis knows what he's doing, and will have all the cap room he needs before we get close to the season opener.

What is with this organization and premature extensions?  We didn't see if Wilson could actually get the team to the playoffs without imploding, and we haven't seen if Nonis can manage the cap and actually improve the team from a 1st-round exit (or even get them to the playoffs again).

At least Wilson's deal Burke had the excuse of saying that it is common to extend a coach before the end of the year, but I am hearing Nonis still had 2 years left on his current deal?

Well I don't doubt he'll get under the cap by the start of the season, it's that there are different ways to get us there.

For example if there is no deal for Liles then someone like Franson might have to go.  That gets us under the cap but I wouldn't like it.  He may have every intention of dealing Liles like most of us want him to, but that doesn't guarantee that he'll find a dance partner instead of having to resort to something else.

I see your point, but I have to believe a capable GM has plotted out his course before leaves the driveway. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't put himself in a position where he has to trade away players he wants to keep because of bad planning. If people want to believe he's that inept than I guess they should also believe he's not fit to be GM?

But Nonis' deal wasn't for the position he's currently in. Some sort of re-working was inevitable to reflect that he's the permanent GM going forward. Better to think of it less as an extension and more of a hiring.

Yeah I was thinking about that, it could be about properly hiring him as the GM including a pay increase.

You are correct

@reporterchris: Dave Nonis tells Prime Time Sports his previous #leafs deal was ripped up. So the five-year "extension" starts today.

And, there's also a new man running the show, so, he may also want to have things in spelled on in writing that may have not been there before, and so on. There's a lot of reasons for this to happen now, and, really, at the end of the day, Nonis wasn't going anywhere for at least a couple seasons, so, all this really means is that he'll get paid by MLSE for at least 5 more years, regardless of whether he's still in the position of GM.

True. If the Wilson extension taught us anything it's that they'll fire someone even if they're owed money so at that point they can give people 20 year extensions for all I care.

Also I forget how to do hyperlinks

I have said this on other threads without response... the Leafs will have another ten to fifteen million in cap space to sign Kadri and anyone else next year. 10 to 15 million. Count on it.

Kadri??  So you think he is going to sign a one year deal this summer, I very much doubt that.
