Nonis signs extension

Kadri??  So you think he is going to sign a one year deal this summer, I very much doubt that.

I'd doubt it, as well, but, at the same time, considering the situation, it could be what's best for both parties. The Leafs get things a little easier on the cap this coming season and Kadri, if he performs close to how he did this past season, would be in-line for a larger contract than he'd get right now.

It's important for an organization to solidify the employment of it's top personnel, and that's exactly what MLSE did with Nonis by signing him to a new extension contract.

It indicates the organization's belief in their GM's capabilities and decision-making as per for the benefit of the club towards it's eventual goal for greater improvement.

Nonis knows what he wants for the Leafs, what it will take to get them on the road to further success, and how to go about it.  So far, as we've this past season and recently, so good.

He seems to be saying the right things. I'm hopeful this extension gives him the confidence to remain patient and build for the long term.

What is with this organization and premature extensions?  We didn't see if Wilson could actually get the team to the playoffs without imploding, and we haven't seen if Nonis can manage the cap and actually improve the team from a 1st-round exit (or even get them to the playoffs again).

At least Wilson's deal Burke had the excuse of saying that it is common to extend a coach before the end of the year, but I am hearing Nonis still had 2 years left on his current deal?

Yeah but what is the big deal and why does it matter so much? Wilson was canned 2 months after signing it so it's not as if it forces the team to keep the player in that job for the duration. If Nonis blows things next year he will be gone too.  Really, it just seems to get people bent out of shape about what the Leafs spend or commit to front office/coaches/etc for no reason.

To me the justification for it is that Nonis has one of the most demanding roles in the NHL, if not THE most demanding, maybe next to Carlyle. The expectations are ridiculously high from every angle.  He should be compensated fairly for that.

Going from 3 to 5 years is really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme.  I think you want these guys to be comfortable so they always have the long-term vision of the team as their main focus. This helps solidify that.

Yeah. Let's see how it goes, Right now, I'm skeptical. Signing an expensive long-term UFA winger whose peak will be past in three years at (what's looking like) the expense of signing a talented RFA who's just entering his peak does not exactly scream patience and building for the long term.

Nonis was always being groomed to be Burkes replacement, just happened a lot sooner than we expected and lets see where it goes, can't be any worse than the last 60 years...LOL

Nonis accomplished in one season what Burke could not do during his entire reign.  By extending Nonis it gives the team stability at the top and gives the organization to fire him if he can't produce results.  The team is already better now on paper than the team that lost in the heart breaker.

Yup, the acquisitions of Frazer McLaren and Ryan O'Byrne re just what the Leafs needed to make the playoffs.

Not sure where you get McLaren and O'Byrne from my comment, but being a mod I will let that slide...for now.

All I was referring to was how Nonis gave toughness to the team that didn't exist under Burke's reign and how he has been working to improve the team since the end of the season.  True, the two players didn't help the Leafs make the playoffs...Leafs would have made the playoffs without them but the Leafs weren't going to be pushovers either.
