Of Nonis, Babcock & who the heck is going to be running this asylum on draft day

Yeah but why bother with the middle man? If he's the one running the show why doesn't he just make himself the GM and hire an assistant to run the day to day stuff? Isn't that Dubas' job? I just don't see someone wanting to come here to be a puppet, unless it's someone with no experience.

He won't be hiring a guy to be a puppet, though. There's a pretty wide gulf between that and hiring someone else to carry out your vision. Shanahan won't be micromanaging every move or anything like that. He won't be sitting there pulling strings. He'll be laying out the roadmap, and having a say in the bigger moves, but it will be ultimately up to the GM to make things happen. That's really not an abnormal situation in the business world. In fact, it's how a large portion of it works.

So why can't Nonis do that?

Well, we really don't know what kind of President Shanahan is.

A lot of newer Presidents actually tend to micromanage a fair bit, given they're trying to put their stamp on things.

For all we know, Shanahan wants his fingerprints all over this thing, and a seasoned GM wouldn't want to be a puppet-type of General Manager.

I'm all for discussing player transactions, team building, and play on the ice, but I'm really not sure who is pulling the strings with this team...now, or in the season to come.

Because he's been a failure with the team. He deserves to be replaced.

Just seems like a waste of time to bring in a guy to just carry out the bosses orders, and honestly, I think a lot of experienced GMs will feel the same way.

I think a lot of that is because the Leafs haven't been structured that way in a long time. It's really not that abnormal. Maybe some of the more experienced GMs won't want to be a part of it, but others will be open to it. It also wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to bring in new blood. The way things are done is changing, and it could very well be a much better move to bring in someone who is less set in their ways and more open to adapting to the changing landscape of the league.

Also, regardless of how the front office is structured, Nonis does not deserve to keep his job. It's that plain and simple in regards to him specifically.

I'm not advocating for Nonis' job. I'm just asking questions.

You a cop?

Here's my list of guys who I think have played their last game as a Leaf:

Phaneuf
Lupul
Bernier
Reimer
Kadri
Gardiner
plus some of the scrubs

Just my hunch.

Interesting. I'm 50/50 on Kadri, but leaning more towards the Leafs keeping him. I think Phaneuf is gone for sure, and I think they'll try hard to move Kessel but I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed. I also think Lupul will stay. He's not cheap and the injury concerns coupled with his pretty awful play in the 2nd half has me thinking interest will be very low. Something tells me van Riemsdyk won't be here next year.

I think you're wrong about Kadri and Gardiner, and you're missing Bozak. I also think at least one of Reimer/Bernier will be back. I don't think we're going to see turnover to the extent people are hoping for happen this summer.

My bet is at least one of the guys who everyone assumes is gone will stay (Bozak) and at least one who we think will stay won't (Kadri). As for the goalies my guess is that whoever the new GM is will want to go in a whole new direction there.

I do agree that the turnover won't be nearly as complete as I would like.

This team needs a complete culling!  Spare no one!

I don't think the sort of turnover people are hoping for is possible. Not in one summer.

I think that's an understatement. Truth is, I think a lot of the players that people want to see traded are going to be essentially unmovable. Likewise, I think there's more than a few who are probably at their absolute lowest value right now.

I get that people want the rebuild to go fast but it's way more important that it goes right.

Further to that point, they still have to ice a team next year, and while you can go out and sign a bunch of scrubs to play, you don't necessarily want to expose your young players to that losing environment.

Yeah. There are really only 2 players that I see the team being kind of rushed on moving, and they would be Phaneuf and Lupul. Bozak would be next on the list for me, and I think there's a good chance he could be moved this summer, but, he doesn't come with the same urgency in terms of age and contract. I don't feel there's a whole lot of need to rush with the rest of the roster. The other bigger pieces are young enough to wait until the right deal comes along.

I hope they can find a taker for Lupul.

The one thing that hasn't been brought up yet, or at least I haven't seen it, is the fact that some of the Marlie guys people are penciling into the Leafs lineup just won't be ready for those roles next year, unless they are rushed along. I hope management is smart enough to avoid doing that. These guys need the proper seasoning before they get put into the spotlight.
