Official meeting place of the Kadri Cadre

Just the 3.5m annual cap hit that Kadri is apparently asking for.

Yes, it is a weird comparison.

It's more than just weird. It's comparing a defenceman to a forward, a UFA to an RFA, a contract signed 5 years ago to one being negotiated this summer, and using a mistake by a senile Cliff Fletcher that resulted in the player spending half of the contract in the AHL in order to avoid the cap hit - which can't be done anymore - as a comparison. Really, is an absurd comparison.

Remember when we all thought is was $3.5 mil FOR four years not PER? Good times.  8)

I'd also like to add that it could be somewhere in the middle, too.

Well, I would hope that would have been understood. I mean, very few things in this world are black and white, right?

The Sharks Logan Couture on Kadri's contract negotiations...

?I don?t know why he doesn?t just do a two-year deal,? Couture told sportsnet.ca on Thursday during the NHL?s player media tour. ?Play and have a good two years like you know you can and then you?ll sign a nice deal after. You?ve just got to be confident that you?re going to have two good years.?

Back when Couture was coming off his entry-level deal like Kadri is now, he had no qualms about accepting a shorter deal that allowed him to establish himself as a high-level NHL player.

?We both decided what was fair for me and what I thought was fair,? Couture said.

...Colorado Avalanche centre Matt Duchene, Dallas Stars winger Jamie Benn and Pittsburgh Penguins winger James Neal are among those who have followed that pattern.

Duchene believes the $7-million, two-year contract that he signed in 2012 was directly responsible for the $30-million, five-year deal that followed it.

?It motivated me to really push to get that next thing,? Duchene said.

?At the end of the day, maybe I lost a few bucks at the end of my career in those two years that I could have potentially made if my third year had gone differently,? Duchene said.
?But that?s not what I?m about, that?s not what it?s about for me. We?re all making great livings here and it?s not going to make a difference in the way I live my life and my well-being.

?I?m not too worried about it ? the motivation was more beneficial than those extra dollars would have been.?

Plenty of advice for Kadri.

Maybe Kadri doesn't want to be here and will only stay if they overpay for him, he did grow up a Habs fan. He is a good player with lots of potential, hopefully they come to a deal soon so he doesn't miss training camp and falls a step behind everyone.

Jeeze. How much is MLSE paying these reporters to ask Couture and Duchene about this?

Like MLSE actually has to pay reporters to go fishing for quotes from people who aren't really connected to the situation.

I'd be a little disappointed by a two-year deal. I know people think that it would be the best thing for the Leafs but I kind of go the other way. If you can sign him to a deal similar to the one Adam Henrique signed I think the Leafs ultimately do better for themselves and, quite frankly, the Leafs need some guys performing well above their contract if they're going to have a bunch of guys on the roster like Clarkson, Bozak, Kessel and Phaneuf who they'll be paying at market value.

So while I appreciate that that sort of thing doesn't fit into the Leafs current cap situation it would have been nice to have locked Kadri up until he was 28-29, I think.

I think a Henrique-type deal would be an excellent deal for the Leafs.  Current salary cap be damned.  Without any info and just pure speculation on my part, I don't think though that Kadri would settle for "only" $4 milion over the next six years.  He keeps up what he did this past season and he knows he will get paid.  Guys like Duchene and Couture each signed deals for $6 million.  We can debate where he fits amongst those guys, but he is closer to them than he is Henrique.

Again, pure speculation on my part, but my guess is he is looking to cash in on a bridge deal (2 years, $4 per; because the Leafs won't go on a longer team without it being under their financial terms), and then hitting the motherload after that.
