Official Ottawa Senators Thread

A top heart specialist performing surgery on well-to-do foreigners is, by definition, not available at that moment to treat Ontarians.

The hospitals answer that they can use medical tourism funds to keep operating rooms open longer and thus reduce wait times for Ontarians. But this in turn, underscores the real problems of the health-care system ? the fact that governments, both federal and provincial, are cutting back funds.

If this money comes from the public, the system will respond to public needs. But if it comes from wealthy foreigners, the system will respond to their needs. This is how things work. It is a fact of life.

Medicare is based on the notion that access is determined by need rather than wealth, that the sickest are treated first.
Medical tourism turns this principle on its head. Access goes to those willing to pay.

Melnyk has a rare blood type, so a living donor is required.  The liver is a regeneratiive organ:

In that procedure, the right lobe of the donor?s liver is removed and implanted in the person in need, with the old liver removed. Both livers, the donor?s and the recipient?s, grow back to normal size in a matter of weeks if all goes well. And they don?t have to be matching blood types.

It's been a tough season for the Sens:

On the subject of how Melnyk got the donor, the Senators announced that 20 of the potential live liver donors for Melnyk have moved forward as donors for someone else.

No one should begrudge him if that's how he keeps in shape.  As long as it doesn't affect his play, no one (in Senatorsland) will be complaining.

He's a relatively young man, so it probably works for him.

I suspect as he gets older he will need a significantly different attitude if he wants to continue to play the way he does at the highest level.

Some random game notes: Michalek playing career game 699 tonight and Karlsson is playing 399. Turris plays career game 400 - probably going to jinx him now but Turris hasn't missed a game as a Sen. We currently have 15 of our own draft picks on the roster. Toronto has 4. Hate the BOO - we always seem to lose these games

That's pretty impressive, no doubt.

What I like about this organization is that they've never been afraid to do what's best for the club, be it a risky trade or whatever.
Our Leafs are just beginners on that road, thanks in part to Shanahan.
