Despite the zebras' best efforts, Sens win 4-3 in OT.

Turris has played two games, and has assisted on two game winning goals.

Incredible!... On a point per game basis, since the trade, he's turning in a Rundbladian performance. - Good for him and Sens fans alike!  :P  :D

Oh man, Shane Prince ripped team USA after getting cut.

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/World+juniors+Prince+doesn+think+fair+shake/5900769/story.html
?I don?t know why I expected anything else from USA Hockey . . . I don?t even know why I ever got invited,? Prince said as he waited in Calgary for a flight to take him to his family home in Rochester, Minnesota for Christmas.

?I just felt from Day 1 the team had already been picked. I just feel they had their guys picked right from the start. Some guys felt they had the team made no matter how they played. And they didn?t give the others a chance.?

[...]

Looking back, Prince probably should have seen the writing on the wall after the Americans? first pre-tournament exhibition game Tuesday against Russia, a 6-3 loss during which his line was on the ice for only seven shifts and had just one opportunity in eight U.S. power plays.

In the team?s second game on Wednesday against Switzerland, Prince was a healthy scratch.

[...]

?When we first arrived, we were all told we would be given fair opportunity,? Prince said. ?Then I get six, maybe seven shifts. . . . And then when I didn?t play the next game, I felt maybe I had an idea of what was happening.

?If that?s fair opportunity, would somebody mind letting me know that? I really thought I could be a go-to guy on this team and I was never given that chance.?

I get the frustration, but ripping your national team is never a good idea.  He'll be ineligible for the juniors next year, but those guys have long memories.  It may come back to bite him if he's looking for the World Championships or Olympics some day.

Jared Knight said pretty much the same thing last year, that they a grudge against the guys who play major junior instead of college or the US development league.

Jesus, Ferret, what did we do to piss off the refs?

Foligno got tossed for "charging".

EDIT: And the Panthers tie it up on the 5:00 PP.  Those refs better hope that doesn't affect the outcome.

EDIT2: Reviewing FLA goal for a kicking motion.  $20 says it doesn't go our way.

EDIT3: Surprise, surprise.  It counts.

I can't say it's a surprising call.

He left his feet, which is automatically a charging call, no?

Nah, both skates were on the ice at the point of impact.  Ellerby went low, Foligno went in the air as a result of the collision.

Yeah it was a HS call - I don't know what to say about the officiating anymore. Florida's first goal shouldn't have counted either.
Good character win though, the hockey Gods gave us a bounce in OT. Canes tonight..

Karlsson!

How awesome would it be if we got another B.O.O this post-season? Long over-due...

Maybe we're heading back into an age like the late 90s, early 2000s when the Leafs and Sens would always make the playoffs and the Habs were out?

I'm not ready to count the Habs out yet but it's getting close to being a 10 count yeah.

Cheapseats: No reason to ban Foligno

OTTAWA - Hold your fire, Sheriff Shanny.

There is no way Nick Foligno should be facing a suspension for nailing Panthers defenceman Keaton Ellerby at 6:37 of the second period.

After being given a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct ? because officials Tim Peel and Justin St. Pierre overreacted to the hit ? Foligno is going to face an immediate review from NHL VP of safety Brendan Shanahan.

?I was disappointed that was the call,? said Foligno. ?He?s coming around the net with his head down. I have to finish that play. I?m not even trying to hit him. I just noticed we were going to collide.?

Since Foligno didn?t have his elbow up or leave his feet, he shouldn?t get anything, but who knows? Shanahan has been unpredictable when it comes to handing out discipline so it?s hard to say what route he might take.

If Buffalo?s Paul Gaustad didn?t get anything for a hit that left Senators F Jesse Winchester with a concussion, then neither should Foligno.

The most he should have gotten was a minor penalty.

THE CLOCK STRIKES ZERO

Scoreboard watching at Scotiabank Place will be worth it after Christmas. In their final home game before the holiday break, the Senators bid farewell to the relic they call a scoreboard as work on the Bell HD screens made by Panasonic started shortly after the final buzzer. By the time the Senators face the Canadiens Tuesday, the four screens ? five times larger ? will be installed and the rest will be completed by the all-star weekend. ?It?s not a sad day, that?s for sure,? said C Jason Spezza. ?We?re excited to have the new scoreboard and the fans are excited. It?s great for (owner) Eugene (Melnyk) to step up and get it with some of the sponsorship they got. We?ll be happy to be able to see the replays and figure out exactly what happened on plays.? While the cameras always show players on the bench staring up at the board after scoring a goal, they use it as a reference.

OFF THE GLASS

You?ve likely seen the last of C Peter Regin this season. The left shoulder he?s had surgically repaired last season and has injured three times has put Regin on the shelf after it stiffened up following the Buffalo game. Regin, who missed 22 games rehabbing the shoulder after getting reinjured Oct. 19 vs. Winnipeg, had only returned for five games. Coach Paul MacLean said Regin will have to consider surgery. ?I think it?s very frustrating for Peter,? said MacLean. ?It?s devastating for him. He has to make the decision that?s best for him. I know (surgery) is one of the options.? ... RW Erik Condra made the best save of the night, sweeping a puck off the goal-line behind G Craig Anderson late in the second period ... Florida?s Stephen Weiss left the game six shifts into the first period with an undisclosed injury.

THE MORNING SKATE

There will be 19 people over for Christmas Eve dinner at captain Daniel Alfredsson?s place. Teammates Erik Karlsson and Regin will be there along with Alfredsson?s family. ?We try to stick with Swedish traditions and foods,? said Alfredsson. ?Santa Claus comes to our house on Christmas Eve. He knocks on the door. He doesn?t creep down the chimney.? Karlsson can?t wait to chow down. ?This is my third year. It?s really exciting to eat some Swedish food at Christmas,? said Karlsson. So, what?s a traditional Swedish Christmas? ?You have to go to IKEA,? joked Karlsson. ?It?s hard to explain because you guys don?t have it here: A lot of potatoes, meatballs, sausage, eggs. It?s a big table. I?m glad I can eat as much as I want.? ... W Milan Michalek (concussion) won?t return until Tuesday. ?I?ll get a couple of extra days and make sure I?m 100%,? said Michalek ... With Regin and Michalek out, the Senators recalled F Mike Hoffman from Binghamton. He will be in the lineup Friday in Raleigh ... The Senators weren?t happy draft pick and 67?s F Shane Prince was cut by the Americans for the world juniors. ?We thought he could play at that tournament,? said GM Bryan Murray. ?I know with his head and hands we felt, in a short tournament, that he would really help them.?

Fair enough. I saw it at full speed (as I'm sure the officials did), but that's pretty clear cut.

Can't say blown calls are anything new in the NHL, though..

Regin likely done for season

Peter Regin?s season is likely over.

The Senators centre wasn?t on the ice Thursday morning at Scotiabank Place after his surgically repaired left shoulder stiffened up and he?s going to have to decide whether he?s going to have another procedure to get it repaired.

Regin won?t be in the lineup against the Florida Panthers and he?s out indefinitely.

Winger Bobby Butler returns and defenceman Brian Lee will be in the lineup with the club carrying seven blueliners.

?It happened during the game (Tuesday) and it stiffened up on him,? said coach Paul MacLean Thursday.

?I think it?s very frustrating for Peter. For us, he?s an important player we think a lot of, but it?s devastating for him.

?He has to make the decision what?s best for him. I know (surgery) is one of the options.?

Regin originally suffered the shoulder injury last February.

He had surgery, took it easy in training camp and re-injured the shoulder in October. He missed 22 games and only returned Dec. 10 against the Vancouver Canucks.

The Senators were hopeful with the arrival of centre Kyle Turris from the Phoenix Coyotes, the club would have plenty of depth down the middle.

?We did enjoy the depth that Peter gave us on the third line for one game,? said MacLean.

Winger Milan Michalek (concussion) was on the ice with the team for the second straight day, but didn?t have any contact and won?t play until after Christmas.

He is expected to suit up Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens.

ALFREDSSON LOOKS FOR MILESTONE AS SENATORS VISIT HURRICANES

(Sports Network) - Daniel Alfredsson has tapped into the fountain of youth a bit in an effort to replace injured leading goal-scorer Milan Michalek.

The 39-year-old will try to give himself an early Christmas present with a milestone goal this evening and lift the Ottawa Senators to a fourth straight victory in a matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, who are also without their top goal scorer.

Michalek is pacing the Senators with 19 goals this season, but has missed the past four games with a concussion and is out indefinitely. Alfredsson has picked up the pace since, logging three goals and nine points over his last four games.

Alfredsson scored the 399th goal of his career and logged two assists in last night's 4-3 overtime win against the Panthers. Bobby Butler was credited with the winning goal as his pass attempt to Erik Karlsson hit off of a Florida defender and in.

Chris Neil and Karlsson scored while Craig Anderson made 32 saves. Ottawa gave up three one-goal leads, but is still in position to win four in a row for the first time since a six-game run from Oct. 20-30.

"We had a hard time getting the momentum in the game, but I think going into the third we were just sticking to it and never quit," said Karlsson, who has two goals and five assists over his last three games.

Carolina, meanwhile, played for the fifth time in a row without Jeff Skinner on Wednesday. Skinner leads the Hurricanes with 12 goals and 24 points, but is also out with a concussion.

The Hurricanes led the Coyotes by two goals on Wednesday, but allowed three unanswered goals over the game's final 26-plus minutes to drop a 4-3 decision and lose for the fourth time in five games.

"We got that third goal and I thought we were in good shape," Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller said. "Then they get that second goal and the team kind of dropped its energy. That's what we have to get away from."

Tuomo Ruutu, Andreas Nodl and Jiri Tlusty scored for the Hurricanes, while Cam Ward allowed all four goals on 19 shots in the loss. Carolina fell to 9-1-2 when leading after two periods.

The Hurricanes won their final three meetings with the Senators last season by a 15-4 margin, but have lost a pair of encounters to the club this year. They had a seven-game home winning streak in this series halted on Oct. 25 with a 3-2 shootout loss, but have still outscored the Sens 30-12 in those eight games at RBC Center.

Sergei Gonchar is pacing the Senators with four points -- all assists -- versus Carolina this year, while Jason Spezza has three goals and Anderson has been in net for both wins.

Ruutu has a goal and two assists versus Ottawa this year, while captain Eric Staal has a goal and a helper. Ward has just an .887 save percentage in the two meetings.
