Pens interested in Winnik

Wasn't that basically the rumoured deal that Elliotte Friedman talked about? That the Kings rejected a Phaneuf for Richards/Toffoli package? Toffoli seems like somebody that they have absolutely no interesting in trading. And I also don't think that they'd really have that much interest in Phaneuf. They already have their top defence pairing locked down in Muzzin-Doughty, if they look to acquire a defenceman it will be somebody for their 2nd pairing to replace Voynov.

I don't think it's financially viable to have 3 defensemen like that but holy smokes would their defense ever be good with Phaneuf as a #3 defenseman.  Say what you want about Phaneuf, he may not be a top 10-15 defenseman but he's certainly still a lower end #1 in my books.  If he's playing restricted minutes on the 2nd pairing and PP that is a dynamite defense.

It'd be pretty good but I don't think it'd be head and shoulders above, say, St. Louis or Nashville.

A week or so ago, either he or Lebrun tweeted that the Leafs rejected any proposals from LA that involved taking on Richards. So, there's definitely some confusion out there as to who that deal is less palatable for.

We will have to take salary back

There's taking back salary and then there's taking back deadweight. Any contracts the Leafs take on in a Phaneuf trade will either be short-term salary dumps or useful pieces, not long-term cap anchors.

Yeah, unless it's Richards for Clarkson (and really, only because the buyout for Richards is more pallatable), not interested in that contract at all...

...Toffoli, on the other hand, would be a sweet addition.  I'd also be curious on if they'd be willing (or even allowed to) move Voynov...as long as we're taking chances and all.

I think Polak would be a pretty good fit with LA, especially given the style he plays.  And he's a lot more affordable option than Phaneuf.

Yeah, I remember there were a couple different versions of the story, almost like that one Kaberle trade. Anyway, I'm not sure a Phaneuf for Richards/Toffoli trade makes a lot of sense for either team really.

Yeah, I think that'd be a hard no from me on that one.

I think that's true but Polak is one of what I'm guessing is going to be a lot of players who teams want to move because they seem like good deadline pieces but they're probably not going to fetch a 1st round pick. So then it becomes a situation where you're kind of in an uncomfortable middle ground where they won't get a 1st but a 2nd seems like not enough.

I think, for Polak, the return would be something like two 2nd round picks - similar to what Robyn Regehr went for a couple seasons ago. That likely means at least one of those picks would be in 2016, but, both the Rangers and the Bruins have a pair of 2nd round picks in 2015 - and the Bruins have been rumoured to be looking for help on the blue line.

That makes sense. I don't know about Boston specifically as I think the pick they're getting from Philly might end up on the high side for that sort of deal(although Philly's recent push might change that) but I think you're right in the broad strokes.

Polak probably fits in with a Bruins style of hockey too.
