Lavoie says he waived only for Vegas which means they can't trade him to anyone else.

Reports are that Ottawa asked Phaneuf to waive his NMC so he can be exposed. The sens want to protect Karlsson, Methot, and Ceci ahead of him. I think in that situation though they're probably hoping to do a side deal where Dion wouldn't get picked by them anyway.

I bet you McPhee is the busiest guy in hockey right now.

At least, not without his permission...
Fleury was great when he played and even a better teammate when he didn't. I hope he gets an opportunity to play next year.

Side deals are so lame.

I can't wait to see what these end up being. I can't help but feel like they're going to be pretty one-sided, but I just don't know for which side.

I would assume for Vegas.  "Oh, you don't want us taking Cam Fowler?  Offer us something better than Cam Fowler, then."

Teams that are making side deals are the ones in competitive spots with horses they want to keep. I think these deals are more likely to be sending picks, promising prospects and/or players with name recognition value (and cap floor reaching) that'll fit VGK's ramp up to competitiveness in some way without hampering the donor team's present.

VGK will be getting two-three pieces on each of these deals, and they can offset the contract slot crunch by drafting pending UFAs.

I really think people are going to be surprised by what Vegas is able to do with all of their cap space. I don't think it'll translate into being competitive right away but I think very shortly we'll talk about them as having one of the deeper prospect pools in the league.

If Vegas played their cards right, I don't think it's crazy to think they could easily get five 1st round draft picks from side deals. Anaheim, Winnipeg, Minnesota, Nashville, Ottawa, and Columbus would all give up 1st round picks I think if it meant not losing an impact player from their roster. Plus they could probably get a boatload of 2nd and 3rd rounders for agreeing to take their 2nd or 3rd best option as opposed to their 1st best option for a number of other teams. Then go back and start getting more picks in return for taking on bad contracts. They could seriously have a crap ton of picks in the next couple of years.

I have heard a few times on the radio that goalies are probably going to be the best value/caliber available to them via the expansion draft. The theory is they may take as many as 6 decent goalies with plans on flipping some of them into prospects/picks. Interesting theory to draft players that someone else covets. My argument would be if that player is coveted why wouldn't that team trade for him pre-draft especially if they are going to be available in the expansion draft.

I would not be surprised if the Expansion Draft just turned into VGK making 30 side deals and 'drafting' as prescribed. Even teams that don't need to make huge adjustments (e.g. Leafs) probably wouldn't be opposed to a cap clearing move for a pick.

It's an interesting theory, but the actual number of quality goalies with NHL experience is going to be very limited. There will be some potentially interesting goalie prospects available - but, at the same time, they're prospects that haven't become a full-time NHL player in something like 5 years since they were drafted. There isn't likely to be much in terms of actual trade value there.

And, yeah, there aren't likely to be any players that other teams 'covet' available in the draft. There will be some that interest other teams, but, not enough for them to protect in the draft ahead of players currently on their rosters - which is why they won't be trading for them before the expansion draft.

That means at least, right?  Because that math only adds up to 26 players, and they have to pick 30.
