Game Notes
NSH
-Jusse Saros (6-10-5, 2.62 GAA, .911 Sv%) will likely start for the Predators
-If you haven't heard, things aren't going great for Nashville this season after a very splashy offseason. They're currently 2nd last in the Western conference, behind teams like even San Jose and Anaheim
-Stamkos and Marchessault have just 13 and 12 points respectively in 25 games this season. Brady Skjei is on pace for less than 30 points after getting close to 50 last season (in a contract year)
TOR
-Joseph Woll (6-2-0, 2.13 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs

According to puckpedia, it looks as though Nashville has 3 first round picks in the 2025 draft.

Vegas' pick, Tampa's pick, and their own.

That's why I hope the Leafs are nowhere near Stamos' numbers when it comes to a new deal for JT. Don't care what JT's numbers look like this year overspending for declining and aging players is usually a mistake. People say the cap is going up but you still need to be smart. 4 years at 8 million for Stamkos and already looks like a horrible signing. What's he going to be like at 37-8?

I'm not sure if it's Stamkos declining or the fact that every prominent UFA Nashville signed seemed to lose their game this season. There's a huge roster-wide issue there.

I can appreciate the Tavares resurrection but he's already been overpaid for the last couple years.

You know I don't want to downplay what Tavares has done so far this season, he's been great, but I keep seeing stuff like resurrection and I don't think that's really fair.

He has 22 points in 23 games so far this season with 13 coming at 5-on-5. That's with a 13.8% shooting percentage, and a 11.6% on-ice 5-on-5 shooting percentage.

Last season through 23 games he also had 22 points with 12 coming at 5-on-5. Then he had just a 9% shooting percentage with a 7.3% on-ice 5-on-5 shooting percentage.

Again this isn't to diminish what JT's accomplished but to say that he's played this well through the first 23 games of a season as recently as, well, last year. He hit a big midseason lull last year so that's what he can hopefully avoid this time.

I'm not 100% sure that Tavares has declined as much as people like to let on. His numbers have always kind of moved like rolling hills

We waited for Willy Styles to have his best career stretch of hockey before we signed him, thankfully he's kept it going and is the right age. JT is still an awesome 2C but a good run of hockey doesn't mean we should be assuming it continues, $8M x 4 (Stamkos) is far too much.

Maybe come up with a total amount he needs with the understanding that the last year will be an LTIR year to bring the cap hit down?

Resurrection may not be the best word to use then.

9th highest cap hit in the league, 55th in total points this year so far.

25th in points in the league since signing with the Leafs.

Where is the value in that?

I think he has been paid handsomely for his services as a Leaf. If he's looking for much over $6m a year, I would not do it.

Will be great to see Schenner again. I saw him punch out Jeannot in round III this season with the Preds.

Here are the three rounds for your viewing pleasure.....including Round II which was Leaf Schenn with Tampa Jeannot eating lefts:

Round III

Round II

Round I

I don't like that Reaves keeps playing every night. I also don't think that Alex Nylander is a guy who deserves a spot in the lineup at the point in time.

I think that's something that still remains a bit relevant. Tavares signed his contract 7 years ago. Yes, COVID screwed the world up for a while, but Tavares' cap hit is still a high water mark in the league. Everyone knew that the value in Tavares was going to come in the first few years of the contract. I think the thing is that Tavares has aged better than I expected over the deal...its just the contract hasn't caught up to other elite players.

It is completely wild how off the charts some of the Leafs' contracts are relative to their peers. For me, that's where the resentment comes from when they go out early in the playoffs. It's fun to watch them during the regular season but I would trade the regular season spectacle for playoff success in a heartbeat.
