So it looks like we've flopped to NHL/Marlies squad action, rather than the half-and-half blend. As a final roster, that's really close and also pretty interesting to see Rosen and Aaltonen get those spots.

Quite possibily the finished product right there. Rosen impressed me a lot more in the last game of his that I watched than the first.

Rosen is the safer of the two Swedes.

Also, Earlisaboss mentioned this earlier in the offseason, but we only have enough bonus cushion in the cap for 1 additional 'rookie' (with bonuses) to add. And it will also hamstring the chances for callups with bonuses. Overages from there eat into our cap ceiling. Might actually be worth it though, so...

Great for Dermott though: no performance bonuses to contend with. I think he is slated for #1D on the Marlies, but will likely get the first injury call up.

Bonus cushion at 75M cap is 7.5% = 5.625
Matthews - 2.85M
Nylander - 0.850M
Marner - 0.850M

1.075M leftover

Aaltonen, Rosen, Borgman each = 0.850M

If Aaltonen and Rosen both make the team, that's adding 1.70M to the cushion, which puts us over by 0.625M, which drops our cap ceiling to 74.375M.

I think that's survivable, but each call up with bonuses thereafter continues to eat into that space. I'm not sure how that interacts with LTIR, and I'm not sure where the Lupul thing is heading (probably nothing).

I'm predicting everyone going close to full tilt in this one. Should be a beauty. Great to see all the lads together again :D

The Habs are also basically icing their NHL line-up:

Pacioretty-Drouin-Gallagher
Hudon-Plekanec-Lehkonen
Galchenyuk-Danault-Hemsky
Byron-De La Rose-Froese

Mete-Weber
Alzner-Petry
Davidson-Benn

Montoya/Lindgren

Missing Shaw and Schlemko (who will apparently start the season with Weber) because of injuries.

Top 5 Francophone Leafs:

5. Yanic Perreault
4. Marcel Pronovost
3. Sylvain Lefevbre
2. Vince Damphousse
1. Felix

I couldn't parse this.  What's the bonus cushion?  The amount of bonuses that a team's players may be able to earn in the current year (ie: in 2017-2018) that is allowed to exceed the cap?

The bonus cushion is a restriction placed on teams (ostensibly to avoid teams icing only ELCs on the roster?).

https://capfriendly.com/faq#performance_bonus
What is a Performance Bonus?
A Performance Bonus can be given to a player in addition to their salary. Performance bonuses are only paid to the player if they meet the requirements as defined by the bonus. Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit. Not all players are eligible for Performance Bonuses, and to receive a bonus within their contract, a player must meet one of the following criteria:
The player is on an entry-level contract.
The player has signed a one-year contract and is over 35 years old.
The player has signed a one-year contract after returning from a long-term injury (has played 400 or more games, and spent 100 or more days on the Injured Reserve in the last year of their most recent contract).

So performance bonuses are calculated after the season is finished (i.e. it is not calculated on a per day fraction as the rest of the contract is). The money for performance bonuses can roll over the cap into next season's cap hit (see last season to this season's Leafs). The restriction is that if the total performance bonus amount on your current roster exceeds the cap, the difference exceeding 7.5% will be immediately docked against the team's cap ceiling at that current time.

For example, we exceed the performance bonus cushion by 500k. During the time we have that excess amount, our daily cap hit ceiling is 75M - 0.5M = 74.5M (divided by the number of days of the NHL season: 186).

Real world(ish) example, let's say we open with Aaltonen and Rosen, thus going over the cushion. If we're already up against the cap at 75M, we will be not compliant, and will need to work our roster cap hit down to 74.375M. This is where I'm foggy about LTIR -- what is LTIR going to be calculated against? 75 or 74.375 when calculating the difference we can exceed?

If a veteran gets injured and we call up a Marlie (e.g. Hainsey to IR; Borgman to Leafs), then our cushion is exceeded further by 850k (Borgman's bonus), which will likely preclude any Marlie with performance bonuses from being called up. Call up Dermott though, and that's easy because Dermott has no bonuses.

If an ELC player gets injured and comes off the active roster, then for the duration of that player's IR stint, that bonus cushion is freed up. Let's say Matthews is injured (heaven forfend), our cushion has 2.85M breathing room during his IR time.

Exceeding the cushion is allowed, but costs teams' current cap space to remain compliant. Fortunately, cap space is a rolling figure and accrued daily, so there are paper transactions with waiver-exempt players that the team does to accumulate savings for later in the season, whereby rookies with bonuses exceeding the cushion normally would be more free to be loaned to the Leafs.

The world was a lot easier to understand in the years before the salary cap.  Now you gotta be a Juris Doctor just to follow the game.  The rest of us just stand around with our mouths hanging open, hoping that some kind passer-by will take pity on us and stick the business end of a beer bottle in there for us to suckle.

What happened to the good old days when the Leafs would just buy a Stanley Cup winning roster?

Lol. Matthews with an uncontested wrister to beat Montoya.

Beautiful defence there by Weber.

Was probably studying Matthews? shot map and didn?t think he?d sling one from well above the circles with no support.
