What are the chances Babcock resigns halfway through the season?

I'm resigning halfway through this game. Losing 3-0 and the only real exciting moments for us were from the two forwards who won't actually be on the team this season.

Brutal Gardiner giveaway led to that beauty Eichel goal. Five points already in the pre-season and this is his 3rd game. #Leafs #Sabres

Eichel pretty clearly tripped Gardiner along the boards, Lupul then got the puck and a very weak passing attempt by him was picked off by Eichel who scored on a breakaway. But yeah, Gardiner's fault.

Gardiner's so bad, he makes other players give the puck away. Jedi mind tricks and such.

How'd Hunwick look tonite?  I turned it on with just over 5 left so missed almost all of it.

That seemed to be a constant theme last year.  Blame Gardiner while the forwards get away with murder on a play.

So Babcock mentioned at the start of camp that he liked to have a defined starting goalie going into a season. He said that Reimer and Bernier would get the chance to show what they had in camp and that would determine who was his guy. The guy who knew he was the starter and would play the vast majority of games.

Coming into this game their stats were as follows:

Bernier: 3.03 GAA
            .902  Sv%

Reimer: 2.45 GAA
            .911 SV%

Tonight Reimer stopped 14 of 15 he faced while Bernier stopped 14 of 17 he faced.

Bernier has played about a hair over one period more than Reimer so far, I believe it was the first game where he had the option to come out, but stayed in for the whole game. How that influences this very small sample size I don't know.

Going into this weekend, the coach has said each goalie will get one game, should Reimer continue to post better numbers than Bernier, is he going to be the Leafs starter this year?

If you take Babcock at his word, it would certainly seem that way and personally I think it would be one of the biggest storylines coming out of camp. I think most people had all but written off Reimer.

I think there is a little bit of apathy here, understandably with this sense of the "pain" coming over the horizon, but this makes for a cool little story.

I don't think anything that happens in the pre-season will determine who is the starter this year. I could see if Reimer plays really well in his first few starts and Bernier doesn't that they might juggle the playing time a bit but that all presupposes them wanting to win.

I don't know if I would read too much into that comment. During the Howard-era of the Red Wings they never really had all that good of a back-up goalie. It was a collection of guys like Gustavsson, Conklin, MacDonald, and a well past his prime Chris Osgood. The two seasons prior to the Howard-era though saw Babcock split his goalie starts basically down the middle. I'm sure he's like to have a starter and all that but I doubt he's going to pick a guy on October 7th and run with him throughout the season regardless of what happens.

Well, Gardiner did pull a boner pinch in the 3rd that led to a goal.  Most of the team looked pretty lackluster last night, and Gardiner wasn't his best.

I don't think the forwards got away with anything last year.  They were very extensively criticized from most talented to least talented from January on, and deservedly, Gardiner got his share.

Nobody got off the hook last year, and certainly not Gardiner.

Yeah, and I could see Babcock just coming out and saying "no one emerged as substantially better, so we're going to split it up and see what happens."
