No sense to fire Carlyle if we can get Babcock at the end of the year, what are we going to do work with an interim coach? Hey maybe he can drive us so low as we get the first pick?lol

I'm down with another year of Carlyle if it means Babcock in 2015-16 (since it always works out when we wait for other contracts to end).

Brilliant. Tank for McDavid/Eichel and then bring in Babcock to coach.

Yeah. Let's not set ourselves up for another big disappointment, let's set ourselves up for two. ;)

I figure Carlyle next season, draft McDavid, bring in Babcock, bob's yer uncle, Cup in 2017.  If I'm being conservative.

Well, after they sign guys like Toews, Kane, Krejci, Lucic, Seabrook, Yandle and Stamkos as UFAs over the next few summers, how could they not?

You forgot a few in there...

- We trade Phanuef for Weber
- Kessel for Getzlaf and Perry
- Rielly for Karlsson
- Our 4th line for some beer and tacos for the entire city of Toronto

Then the parade.

and then Babcock signs with another team.. We have Carlyle, no McDavid cause we finished about 14th in the league and the Leafs do what we do best

No. This time it will go as smooth as a road full of pot holes and sink holes.  :D

hahahaha silly me to think otherwise

Well, scratch one name off. Peter Laviolette has been hired by the Predators. He was pretty high on my list, but the Poile/Team USA connection probably meant he wouldn't have considered other offers anyway.

I think the Leafs should just do a one-for-one coaching trade with San Jose. That's what Shanahan has been working on these past three weeks.  ;D

Maybe, but there is an element of being the first in the room to this process. The longer you wait to make a decision and start the process the fewer candidates there are going to be.

And the Leafs, aside from anything else, can probably trump everyone else financially. I'm guessing that will hold some sway vs. international team relationships.

I definitely won't disagree with you there. I would have been calling Laviolette in November/December if I was running the show. Even now, I wasn't really going to get worried about the fact that Carlyle is still employed until other teams started to fill their coaching vacancies and taking potential Leafs candidates. That process has now started, and usually once you see the first coach hired in the offseason others get snatched up pretty quickly. The Leafs need to make a decision one way or another pretty soon.

Even if Babcock becomes available at the end of next season does not mean he will coach the Leafs.  He could very well end up coaching another team such as the Penguins.  It's great to have Shanahan in the organization who has a connection with Babcock but even connections are not enough.

Shanahan could always fire Carlyle part way through the season, hire an interim coach for the remainder of the season then go with Babcock the following season, assuming he became available.  Even at that, I would hate to see the players have to put up with Carlyle even for 1 game, let alone part or full of the season.  There is also no guarantee the Leafs would finish dead last next season under Carlyle.  The chances look pretty good though, if the team could repeat its losing streaks or winless in regulation time streaks, but there could be other teams who are just as bad.

The result could be the Leafs don't get Babcock at all and don't get the #1 pick.  What I would like to see is Shanahan go after Babcock now.  Not sure if the Wings would let Babcock go before his contract expires, but I would definitely try.

Does Shanahan's one season in Detroit that overlaps Babock really hold all that much sway anyway?  I mean lets be honest, there are very few guys in the NHL who don't carry a lot of respect with each other.  I don't think Shanahan holds any magical powers over other guys running organizations.
