Leafs aren't signing him, lose his rights, he's going back into the draft.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone takes a flyer on these guys in the draft, or if anyone grabs them as free agents after. I could maybe see someone interested in Mattinen, especially since he probably had a lot of eyeballs on him in the OHL playoffs/Mem cup.

We could still sign him to an AHL deal, a la Piccinich and Dzierkals, if Dubas and Co. still believe in him (just not enough to use up the contract space), because it looks like he needs more development time and opportunity.

On a somewhat related-ish note, the Panthers have 4.5 hours now to sign or trade Adam Mascherin before they lose his rights and he goes back into the draft. It'd be pretty surprising if they couldn't get anything for him.

At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if they can't. Any team acquiring him would also only have 4.5 hours to sign him, and, unless they've already been given a window to talk to him, they have no idea about his willingness to do so.

though, if I'm the Panthers, I take a conditional 7th rounder at this point just to get something.

Getting back to the goalies, why wouldn't the Leafs just keep McElhinney?  He was just fine, a perfect b/u in many ways (no goalie controversies here).  You put Sparks there and when Freddie starts off slow every bleacher GM will be clamoring for a change.

Both Freddie and team might have been better off this season if they had a back-up they could turn to more while he struggled early. He can't play 66 games again. He just can't. And while McElhinney surprised me literally every time he played, expecting a 35 year old goalie to repeat a career-best season doesn't seem like a smart bet.

Yeah. McBackup's age is a concern for what the Leafs ideally need from their backup. He's getting closer and closer the point in his career when goalies have a tendency to drop off dramatically. I also think he may pass through waivers more easily than Sparks - though, that's hard to say for certain this far from the start of the season.

All these guys going back into the draft would make Hunter drool.  He loves taking over over-agers.

Don't the Leafs also lose Bobylev today since he was drafted out of the WHL (Victoria)?

If the Leafs presented him with a bona fide offer before he signed with his KHL team, no. His signing in a foreign league extends the timeline in that case.

Our list of expirations, to the best of CapFriendly's knowledge.

Agreed and its more than that, the Don Dubas masterplan is to reward Marlies performers with a spot on the main team and to keep that pipeline filled to the brim with replacement parts in case of 1) Physical Injury 2) Cap problems.  By promoting Sparks it gives all the more motivation to keep your chin up whilst in the AHL, hell Sparky's been there for what 4 or 5 years?  He has earned it.

Just reflecting on our prospects:  Rosen has been a big surprise, looking very poised,  Moore is a very fast and deceptive player, highly skilled, nose for the game...reminds me of  Marner "light".  Johnsson, well is Johnsson, 20 points in 14 playoff games, dominant.
Grundstrom could step into Komarov's shoes, no problem and be a huge upgrade there.
Holl could make the jump, I think.  Sparks is a coming as Backup

Talented but need more seasoning, Timashov, Brooks has looked good as well, Marchment, Lillypad, Engvall (hasnt been the force he started out as).

Unfortunately don't ever see room for the Goat or Aaltonater.

Rosen getting a lot more focused development instead of jumping into the NHL like Borgman has helped his game adjust and excel on the smaller ice. He is such a great skater. He'll be a good call up option if any of Rielly/Gardiner miss time.

Trevor Moore actually reminds me of a left shot Connor Brown: hard working, well-positioned winger, but Moore has better speed now. Brown has the better outright shot, but when you're driving the net consistently and being in the right place consistently, then your goals are more spadework than snipe jobs.

I think Marchment could step in to be a 4th liner very soon. Love his game and I can see why the Leafs signed him. Moore has def potential. Has good skill. I think Rosen is ready for the NHL. Johnsson and Grundstrom are ready too.

Martin Marincin?s music. Who might actually have a leg up on Rosen/Borgman because he plays the defensive PK big man role that the Leafs don?t have.

I assume Babcock would have seen a bunch of the Marlies playoff games and seen first hand how the players performed.  Pressure situations can bring out the best (or worst) in players, so hopefully he goes into this season with an open mind about giving some Marlies a chance.

Possibly but the better D man is Rosen who also plays the left side. Borgman is a righty so that's to his advantage. We'll see in the fall..

Borgman is a lefty.

And all three of Marincin, Rosen, and Borgman have experience on the right side.
