Game Notes
DET
-Cam Talbot (6-8-2, 2.97 GAA, .912 Sv%) will likely start for the Red Wings
-Detroit of course made big news over the holiday break when they fired head coach Derek Lalonde and replaced him with Todd McLellan, who started his NHL career as an assistant coach with the Wings under Mike Babcock
-There are many reasons for Detroit's struggles this season. One of the most notable could be the play of their two most veteran forwards. Patrick Kane has just 5 goals and 14 points in 29 games this season while Vladimir Tarasenko has just 4 goals and 12 points in 33 games
TOR
-Matt Murray (1-0-0, 3.00 GAA, .889 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
-Murray was called back up by the team on Thursday and it's likely he'll get this start with Woll getting the high-flying Capitals on Saturday
-Toronto obviously has been off the ice since their last game on Monday which means no updates on the status of both Matthews and Tanev. We'll surely hear about that at the morning skate

Would mean Murray gets to face a fresh Caps team with a likely healthy Ovi. Leafs definitely don't feel like they need to shelter him I guess.
Maybe they're sheltering Woll who got lit up for 4 and 5 goals in his last two starts. He'd only allowed 4 goals in his first game before that - three or fewer the rest of the way before the last two games.

Backups usually get the "back" game and Murray is the backup. Teams don't play as well the 2nd game.

Maybe with Matthews out and Tanev a game time decision, they're trying to get at least a split from the .441 Wings as they face the .706 Caps tomorrow

The thinking seems to be secure the 1st game you have the best chance in and take your chances on the B2B, so start your A team in game 1.

Not gonna lie, this game scares me. Matthews out (hopefully not Tanev too), Leafs coming off some bad games, and a Detroit team playing for a new coach. They better show up on time or they could be behind early.
