Rookie Tournament Roster

Where does that leave Leafstv? They show pre and postgame programming for the rookie tournament but not the live game. Does that make any sense?

Sorta. I mean, we might be talking about viewership numbers that don't require a comma.

There will also be a re-run on LeafsTV at 11:30 p.m. if that interests anyone.

Are you still on Shaw? Is it on Shaw anywhere? (This mystery Rogers channel, that is.)

I cut the cord so I couldn't tell you, but I doubt it.

But...I didn't show you this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgxfvGJlzDA

Watching it on hockey streams, Nylander looks better than everyone else. Kapanen looks good offensively, looked atrocious defensively at least twice. Dzierkals, Korostolev(sp?), Valiev, Dermott have all been standouts. Marner hasn't blown my socks off at all, sample size of course, I wonder if being in London wearing the maple leaf has been a little overwhelming.

Edit: forgot to mention Shoshnikov who looked like a fairly seasoned pro out there too.

The difference was goaltending, I'd need to double check the stats, but it seemed like Ottawa's goalies made some great saves. The Leafs rookies dominated for large stretches and most of the Sens goals seemed somewhat against the run of play.

Nylander & Dermott made for a nifty duo on the point.  Nylander's two goals certainly impressed.

Shosnikov seemed "toolsly" , while the one everyone had expectations for, Marner, didn't seem to live up to them, at least  not yet.
Can say the same thing about the go|altending and in part, the defence.

The Leafs offence blazed the ice,  aren't these guys fast!

Good start to a lot of learning.

Dermott, Joly, Valiev and Brouillard have all looked above average, Dermott especially.

Gauthier hasn't looked great.

Joly and Brouillard impressed me, too.  Gauthier, man, I don't know.  I want to say that I didn't like how he was used on the PK, and that in general there is no unified defensive system to work with in a game like this, but when he has the puck he really doesn't get much done.  This was a good opportunity for him to shine and I don't think it worked out.

Anyway, here's the game in 6 for the Leafs/Habs game:

My son and I watched every minute of the tourney and here are some of our thoughts;

Dzierkals---Seems to have some great movement and potential..sort of like Kapanen light (right now)

Joly--Tres Joly, great offensive potential, really a surprise as I never heard of him but took 3 stupid penalties

Gauthier---Neutral on this, looked just OK, hope he progresses with the Marlies

Marner--Probably was to nervous  in the opener, much better in the final. Not ready as yet, so back to London

Kapanen--very very good offensive capabilities, first time we have seen him and he impressed a lot. Need to work on this defense a bit with the Marlies.

Nylander--Wow, 3 goals and 2 assists in two games.  Haven't really seen it till now but you give this lad another year in the Marlies, hope he grows to 6'1" and gets to about 215lb and he could be the next Sundin.
One of his goals the announcer called "Filthy" just as I was saying the same thing. Was ulitmately the best player on the ice in the games he played.

Rodewald--Scored some goals and looked like the puck follows him, always a good thing. May not make the Leafs but will be a very good Marlie.

Soshnikov--Biggest suprise of the weekend, this guy is NHL ready now, which makes me sad as a RW he would probaby knock out any chance Frattin (one of my fav's) of making the team. Again the puck is always around him and he knows what to do with it. Also very good defensively in addition to his obvious offensive skills, I look forward to watching his progress.

Timashov--Man the Leafs seem to have picked some good later round talent. Timashov has a lot of potential to develop.

Korostelev--Ditto for Korostelev, made a lot of heads up plays

Verhaeghe---Always on the puck and hard to knock off it, good distributer. Has the potential. Way better prospect than Carrick and McKegg, you can already see that.

Valiev--Was best D man in my opinion, very good on the rush and always on the puck..the Marlies and Leafs major problem is how we are going to start moving up some of the D like Loov, Granberg, Percy in the near future.

Dermott, Neilson also looked good as did Brouillard (whom I had never heard of), he scored two on Saturday night and didnt look all that bad on D. Seemed to leave with injury late on Sunday. Finn I am starting to think, will never be a Leaf.

Sparks--Lost 20 lb training this summer and he looked great, very agile and stand up goalie more than a flopper, which I like. Seems to have his head really screwed on. Could possibly be our Goalie of the future.

Overall this tourney was a eye opener for our over all level of talent. Compared to similar games of just a few years back where you would be bored silly after a few minutes, the level of hockey was very entertaining and gave us lots of hope for the future. They seem to know have an abundance of talented prospects.

Thanks for the first-person notes, Highlander. I am definitely angling to catch more than a few Marlies games this year.
