Round 1: Edmonton Oilers vs. Winnipeg Jets

Edmonton called for puck over the glass.  Everything else stops being a penalty but this stupid thing can decide a game.

The cleanse has happened. I will no longer actively root against Edmonton going forward. Til then... Don't let the door hit your ass!

McDavid finished with 1G 3A in 4 games plus 5 periods of OT.
When you only have 2 guys that are a scoring threat it's no surprise. If this was Marner or Matthews, Leaf fans would be all over them.
Anyway, the Leafs showed everyone how to stop him and the Jets played it to a T.

It's open to interpretation how much this is a credit to Nurse vs. an indictment of the other Oilers defensemen.

And really unwise coaching.

This fixation by Leaf fans happy to see McDavid bounced is weird.  I think it has a lot to do with the inferiority complex that many have trying to convince themselves that Matthews is not only equal, but better than McDavid.  Sure, the Oilers fanbase can be insufferable, but the same can be said of ours.

Either way, I feel bad for McDavid.  I'm saying that both as a hockey fan and with McDavid as my favourite player.  He certainly didn't have anything remote to a good playoffs (by his standards at least), but when you're expected to do everything yet the team supporting you consists of Draisaitl and Nurse and not much else, there's only so much one can do.

And as Leaf fans, I would have figured we'd have more sympathy to his plight because we saw and lived it as fans during the Sundin era.  How many times did we hear following the postseason that he was a playoff choker, lazy, couldn't carry a team, etc.?  That's with having Hoglund as his 1st line running mate for years.  Plus, who are we to crap on a player, team and franchise about such a player when the Leafs just finally now might win a playoff series after 17 years?

That being said, Holland has a lot of work ahead of him.  That team is severely flawed with minimal depth.  I'd expect them to go hard after one of the UFA goalies, and the other two positions require an overhaul.

Maybe we're looking at different places, but I don't really see that many Leafs fans happy that McDavid is out. Maybe just in the sense that the Leafs don't potentially have to play him in round 2 (if we advance). But generally speaking I do see a lot of people have sympathy for him. The only thing I'd knock him for is signing an 8-year contract with a team that didn't give him any evidence that they'd provide him with the necessary support to be a contender.

If McDavid were smart he'd be entering year 4 of 5 of his second contract and would likely have the necessary pressure to force a trade out of Edmonton at this point. Instead he's stuck there for another 5 years.

I can't get over how awful of a decision that was by Tippett. He also had Dmitry Kulikov in the press box who the Oilers went out and got at the deadline pretty much so they would have someone on the bottom pair who the coach trusted.

Maybe it's time for the Oilers brass to surround him with future HHOF players.

For me, it's definitely more about how poorly constructed the roster is compared to the amount of hype surrounding them simply because they have 2 of the best players on Earth. They are a bad team, and I feel bad for McDavid and Draisaitl that they're wasting the prime years of their careers in such a terrible organization.

Some generational to great drafts just going to waste

2015:
Edm - McDavid: dying inside
Buf - Eichel: pls trade me
Ari - Strome: oops
Tor - Marner: generally having a great time
Cgy - Hanafin: new number, who dis?
Njd - Zacha: I have no idea what he does
Phi - Provorov: pretty solid
Cbj - Werenski: good player, trash team
Sjs - Meier: nowhere to go but up, right?
Col - Rantanen: this one is working out nicely

Not even going to show the fun Boston run of picks

2016
Tor - Matthews: nice
Wpg - Laine: lol
Cbj - Dubois: lol
Edm - Puljujarvi: lol
Van - Juolevi: omg lol
Cgy - Tkachuk: i guess they're okay with it most of the time
Ari - Keller: seems fair
Buf - Nylander: sad lol
Mtl - Sergachev: lmao what a trade
Col - Jost: doing ok but can you imagine McAvoy there now, wow

I know drafting is shooting craps, but once the kid is in the team's system, that's where talent and potential is supposed to be nurtured into performance and success. These players really don't deserve getting trashed by their organizations' ineptitude.
