SCF: Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

Crazier things have happened but I just feel that a comeback by Edmonton is just not going to happen.

I?m honestly asking - but what crazier thing has happened than a team blowing a 3-0 series lead in the finals?

Well it has happened previously and without the best player in the game beating Gretzky's playoff assist record etc. If one team can do it it wouldn't surprise me much to be on the back of the game's best player, so its not as inconceivable as some other comebacks. And also just generally speaking.

A game being played in the fog in the arena. Or a game being postponed due to a power failure. Or, it happening again, in a game between the same teams, in the same arena, but this time, they were able to finish the game?

Leafs facing their 40+ year old rink manager and erstwhile practice goaltender as an emergency backup, zipping in the first shot through but then proceeding to get shut out and lose in extremely embarrassing and memorable fashion. Said rink manager parlays his 15 minutes of fame into a Disney movie deal before getting milkshake-ducked as a narcissistic abuser.

The Leafs going on to sign the goaltender that got injured (Petr Mrazek) two seasons later to ignoble results, requiring assets to be spent in a trade to Chicago (trade down from 2022 25th overall to 38th). Mrazek backstops his new team to a 1st overall pick and potential generational scoring talent in Connor Bedard.

I think you are just describing what being Leafy is. Leafy, in addition to what you pointed out, is having the much more talented team lose to a bottom feeder in the playoffs, despite having a 3-1 series lead.

But it?s only happened once (in the finals) in the entire history of the nhl. And that was what, in 1940 something? So it does seem to be the rarest of comebacks.

Look I don?t want to start something but come on, if one were to look at the history of sports and improbable things that happened, absolutely no one would compare those 2 incidents with a 3-0 comeback in the finals. And I know you know that.

But the Zamboni driver goalie debacle strikes a nerve and I?m not going to let that go.

The leafs were not beat by their Zamboni driver because:

1 they were already losing when he came in the game. (6-1 I think)

2 they put 3 goals behind him on something like 12 shots. So his performance was, statistically speaking, terrible.

3 Carolina collapsed around him not allowing anything to get through, and completely abandoned trying to score at all.

So I don?t care how people want to frame this, the Zamboni driver did not beat them.

And the Mrazek example is just? completely out of place.

I think if the Oilers stay focused, take it one game at a time, and leave it all on the ice giving it 110% they may be able to pull it off. :)

The bolded is really what happened in that game, for sure. The Canes absolutely smothered the Leafs after the first few shifts with Ayres in net. That, combined with Andersen not having a great game, is what led to the loss. The Leafs managed 10 shots in 28+ minutes against Ayres, and most were softer shots from distance. It was embarrassing, but not for the reasons the Leaf haters latch on to - it was how easily it felt like they were shutdown when they should have smelled blood in the water.

For the record, though, it was 3-1 when he came in. Carolina scored the winning goal on the powerplay they were on when he entered the game, and added a pair in the 3rd.

I was just trauma-dumping and shitposting poop-posting... hmm, that should just be poosting. Going to make it a thing.

It is a good illustration of the Leafs inability to leverage emotions in a game situation under Keefe. He might be going ballistic on the bench, but the Leafs were encouraged, coached, trained to play stoic hockey. The reasoning was sound at first, don't get caught in the low moments and spiral out; but it also bit them in the other direction where they never really rode the wave (because inevitably, they'd get counterpunched on a soft goal off a blue-line turnover).

Thanks for the correction. Honestly I was going to look up the box score so that I would have the facts right but got lazy.

And that?s fair - but that Ayers thing always triggers me, I have a hard time letting that go.

Have you tried trauma dumping online? lol
You could turn it into a youtube schtick for decades, and eventually a mini-but-tenuous podcast empire

I'm not saying it isn't rare, but it's not like a bunch of scrubs vs. the Panthers, it's Connor McDavid and I think it would be both surprising and not at the same time if they did complete a comeback. Also looking at all 3-0 comebacks in the playoffs it is a 2% rate - definitely not as miniscule as to make it THAT crazy, even if very unlikely. A Leafs team doing it again... now that's crazy :P

I could be wrong, but it looked to me like Nugent-Hopkins was the player in possession when he was called for that phantom hook.

Tkachuk pounces on the turnover Evan Rodrigues created stuffing the Oilers breakout and the cats haves clawed back into the game. 3-1

Panthers not going away easily.

Evan Rodrigues answers back the next shift after Perry puts away McDavid?s 1-v-4 grade A primary assist.

Remembering fondly wanting to dump Kerfoot and his 3.5M to pick up Rodrigues and Maxime Comtois instead?
