SCF: Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

Yikes, looking at FLD's salary cap and allocations, I think they bring back everyone.

Zero state taxes... I think both FLD and TB have proven that depth scoring matters and also that no state taxes is a ridiculous advantage.
Bennett is supposedly re-signing at $8M per, which, with the other spots in the lineup they need to fill, makes it basically impossible for them to bring everyone back. Ekblad and/or Marchand (probably Marchand) are going somewhere else.

every talking head I’ve heard recently are saying that Marchand is looking for or going to get 8 mil.

That seems nuts to me, but at the same time, I don’t care if that’s what the leafs end up giving him.

Edmonton coming off back to back Stanley Cup Finals losses.

Next year Draisaitl's 14M extension kicks in so they don't have the 6M in saving they got from him in previous years when he was on that ridiculous 8M contract.

Edmonton has 11F, 6D, 2G and 11M in cap space. Evan Bouchard is their notable RFA and Connor Brown, Corey Perry

Florida coming off back to back Stanley Cups

Florida has 10F 5D 1G and 19M in cap space. Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand are their key free agents.

With their no-tax status I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they find a way to sign both Bennett and Ekblad. Bobrovsky's 10M contract comes up after this year so their goaltending will be cheaper next year.

Can we highlight pack of FLD attacking goalies this playoffs? A highlight pack of the dives and embellishments? How about a cap analysis of how much of over the cap they were? Can we also get a study done about the tax advantages FLD players receive?

  • Let's not try to pretend that the way Florida played is anything new for the NHL playoffs and successful teams.
  • They didn't break any rules with the cap. They used a loophole that other teams have used in the past. We can't be upset because someone knows how to work the system to their advantage.
  • I'm not sure what the tax advantage has to do with the ultimate success of the team. They still can't exceed the salary cap(without using the above loopholes). This year they could spend $88m on players. Just like the other teams in the league.

$12M from the Leafs has the same take-home as $X from FLD? Does anyone know the answer?

I just played with some online calculators and using today's exchange rates $12M USD take home is FLD is $7,312,523 and in Ontario $5,526,730.

You can play with that. But not sure why you’re converting currency, nhl players are paid in USD in Canada.

In general terms (this is from memory) Ontario, Canada tax rate is about 53% (and New York and California is pretty similar). Florida was something like 37%. But, signing bonuses in Ontario for special performers (I forget the language) are only taxed at 15% (this was the fight John Tavares was having with the CRA)

If you sign for $10m with $8m in signing bonus it'd work out something like this:

Ontario
$8m @15%=$1.2m
$2m @53%=$1.06m
Total =$2.26m

Florida
$10m @ 37%=$3.7m

Something around those lines. With signing bonus, Ontario could come out ahead.

My understanding is that it was adjourned, meaning no decision from the CRA has been made, although they are not likely to continue to pursue Tavares for the taxes. I guess this means athletes would have to continue to go through this process until a precedent is set.

If bonuses are just 15% taxed, that would be a massive win for the Leafs. Personally, I think the CRA is right, it's prepaid salary, which is used in a SALARY cap calculation by the NHL.

I think the issue was the initial signing bonus he received in the first year when he signed the contract was eligible to be taxed at the 15% but the "bonuses" in years 2-7 were to be taxed at the regular rate. I think that was the contention of the CRA.

Are there players on that Florida team that chose the Panthers over the Leafs? If not, I'm not sure what you're trying to get at.
