NHL expansion in Seattle a reality? Perhaps...

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/potential-nhl-seattle-owner-talks-relocation-

The relocation should be to southern ontario.  Every other market is lackluster in comparison.  I know some of you might say they are 'saving' that for expansion.  This league is over expanded as is.  Evidenced by the fact so many teams are losing money.  It makes business sense to move teams that don't make money to areas where they will.  Moreover it makes sense to start with the largest untapped market.

I get that part.  To be honest I also get why the NHL has trouble getting fans in the south.

The other thing, and this isn't something I've ever spent a lot of time actually digging into, but I think you could make a pretty good argument that the only region that the NHL hasn't really explored is the Pacific Northwest. A team in Seattle would have a chance to not just appeal to Seattle/Washington State but also Oregon, Alaska and so on. It's an interesting market where they seem hot to sink money into a building.

As well, its an enjoyable destination for those on Vancouver Island to ferry to the States for a weekend (or longer).  I think Seattle would be a terrific location for a team.

Both are great locations, I believe Seattle and naturally also Quebec City would sell the hockey pretty well. Seattle could give Canucks wonderful rivalry.

So Quebec gets the Coyotes and Seattle the Oilers?  ???

Katz goes to check out Seattle. Seems like his way of getting the City of Edmonton to pony up for a new arena.

Katz is a real piece of work.  Basically trying to hold Edmonton hostage with their team to get an arena paid for with public money, even though they're terrible investments.  The Oilers official Twitter retweeted something about the team possibly relocating if it's not done, and now this Seattle stunt.

And yet these guys get support for their lockouts.

That would totally suck for Edmonton to lose the Oilers.  I can't imagine it happening, they have such a history there and 5 cups.  Hopefully this is all stunt and they get something done.

Unless it's a Michael Heisley (not sure of the spelling) situation - who was given a rent free building and the keys to the Memphis kingdom to move the Vancouver Grizzlies there, Katz would be an idiot to move to Seattle. He has significant ties business wise to Edmonton (that would come crashing down like Pocklington's did), he would pay rent in Seattle, and move into a market that has the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLSE (that has 40,000 per game) as well as the University football program that attracts megafans. He'd be 6th in the market. In Edmonton he's basically the top dog other than the Eskimos. Have the Oilers not had a huge run of sellouts too?

No NBA in Seattle right now. Portland is close though.

But he'd be in a market that is much larger in a brand new building and, if anything, the Sounders attendance should be evidence of the fact that Seattle is a really good market. As I mentioned earlier in the thread putting a team in Seattle is something more or less unlike anything the NHL has done in nearly forty years. It's putting a team into not just a city but an entire region of the US that A) has roots to the game and B) has never had a team before(and no, I don't count pre-1920).

If Katz moves the Oilers it'll be with a sweetheart lease and a chance to make a ton of money. Why else would he be considering it?

I would have to think that Seattle would be somewhat welcome by Van, Edm, and Cal. having another team in their geographic region would be much easier on the travel side of things.

What I meant was that the NBA will be there - before the NHL too.

So Quebec is actually going through with the building of an NHL arena.

Bettman & Daly meet with Seattle officials...

According to a published report, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly traveled to Seattle last week to visit with civic officials, fuelling speculation that city will soon be home to a franchise in hockey?s top league. And while nothing is set in stone, Bettman?s trip to see Seattle mayor Ed Murray points to the eventual arrival of a day many hockey industry observers have been expecting for years: the day the NHL expands to 32 teams.

...a Seattle Times report in February had the league already negotiating potential expansion fees with interested ownership groups.

Whoohoo!!!!!!!!  I won't have to watch the Silvertips or Thunderbirds anymore (not that that's bad).  And, I will be able to get a ticket to see the Leafs once in a while for less than $500/ticket.

Bettman and Daly didn't make the Seattle trip alone, they brought potential owner Victor Coleman along with them. It is becoming obvious that the NHL is not going to wait forever on the Chris Hansen/NBA angle in order to get an arena in Seattle. The purpose of the meeting was to ask for the city to change the Memorandum of Understanding for the Seattle Arena proposal. It could be that Coleman and his partners have the finances needed to buy an NHL team and build them a new arena.
