So the debate begins: Matthews vs. Laine

If it was anybody but Perry I'd think it was coincidental. Even with Perry I'm not sure, but I'm also not really willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Is there a non slowed down version?  I mean, it's kind of cheap but I really feel like that play is being blown out of proportion.

I couldn't find a full speed version. I think the game footage was following the play, so they only broadcast the slow-mo follow up.

It was (just) a deliberate slewfoot that Laine turned a knee on as Perry caught his anchor leg as the glide foot was just touching down.

Perry's always been that guy though.

Indeed, but not really excusable in any case.

Give Laine credit a ton of credit here. The Canadians singled him out for extra post-whistle shots and chirping all game, and that was excluding the Perry cheapshot, and didn?t retaliate. Clearly, this is a player who has matured since being kicked off the Finnish team at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament two years ago for flipping the bird to his coach, then giving him a death threat. For kid who just turned 18 to show that kind of poise and maturity in the face of that kind of goading is truly remarkable.

I like players that just play the game, y'know?

I think you'd call that a trip not a slewfoot.  Slewfoot is taking a players feet out from under them with their leg/skates, this seems more like it would be called a trip.  I think the distinction is relevant as slew footing carries a much more dangerous connotation (and punishment).

You're right, I wasn't quite aware of the distinction. Slew footing is taking the skate out from under a player from behind, which could cause a player to fall dangerously backwards.

It's not an excuse but I am less inclined to be outraged when a player like that does something like that.

The way he hit him still remains a risk of causing either an ankle or knee injury, depending on how the target's body twists or falls with the hit.  Maybe I was overreacting talking about a game suspension, but it's still making illegal contact that carries the risk of injury.  I hate crap like that in hockey.

Perry is a pos, just another example in a long list of attempts to injure, I don't think that's an overreaction.

I understand why people don't like Perry, but stuff like that happens virtually every single game. I've learned to keep my outrage powder dry.

Matthews with a pretty goal to make it 1-1 in the QF against the Czechs in a game team USA had been dominated in.

Powerful skating from the outside to beat the dman to the net, backhand deke as he crosses the front of the net and puts it five-hole as the goalie begins to slide.
