Sports Talk Radio Thread

I heard Andy Frost is out next year as the post game guy in the re-org. Now, I know he's the homer of all homers but in a habitual way, I'm going to miss him on my drives home when I'm working nights. Maybe the new guy(s) will be better.

Is that because they are moving the games to TSN and the FAN under the new ownership?

I'm assuming.

I just had to turn off Hockey Central at noon because Kypreos wouldn't shut up and let Mark Spector talk. Of course, as far as I could tell, Kypper was arguing a different point, but that's just me. I can't often stand that show, much like Brady and Lang, which I seldom have on any more.

Almost all of the shows on both stations are totally unbearable.  Brady is a spaz, Cybulski... born and raised in Ottawa (no surprise) just takes really lame pot shots at the Leafs with whichever flunkie he has on at that moment doing the same thing.  You can tell he just loves the state of the team right now.

All gibberish.

The worst has to be Tim and Sid, or as I like to call their show, "2 guys, 4 chins". I know I should pick on their personal appearance but they annoy me so much with their stupid horns.

I found out Brian Hayes ain't too bad.

I'm just uselessly venting now.

It drives me bonkers when I hear these hosts constantly reiterating who their guest(s) is/are.  I understand every so often for those tuning in who may not recognize the voice.

But Jeff Blair and Bob Mackowycz/James Cybulski are notorious for this.  "We have TSN Insider Bob McKenzie on the line with us.  So Bob..."  *question answered in 10 seconds*  "Bob McKenzie of TSN with us..."

I find the best radio is when the Fan590 has their roundtable on Fridays and Brunt and Friedman are part of the discussion.  They are two of the best in the business.

I do like Brunt a lot.  I will listen on my way home when he is on.  Great storyteller and keeps Bob from going off into some ridiculous tangent on some topic he has no business talking to. Friedman is ok too.

Blair is another brutal one.  Just a miserable sod.

The FAN will be doing play-play Leafs games next year?

I don't think they have secured the rights yet. I would imagine with Bell & Rogers co-owning the Leafs they will either split the games right in half, or they will have a fake auction for the rights.

I never used to like either McCowan or Blair, but for some reason I find them tolerable now. I have always liked Blair when he talks about baseball, though.

I agree. That's the only time I've heard sports radio flirt with the idea of having a measured discussion with depth among reasonable people.

I just heard the new opening theme for Blue Jays baseball on the FAN this evening (the part where Jerry comes on and says "Live from the Rogers Centre, it's time for Blue Jays baseball...). They had the same theme for many years, and I would always get really excited when I heard it.

Now they have changed it to some meaningless monotone orchestral piece that doesn't really add anything to the intro. It almost reminded me of how they switched the HockeyCentral at Noon intro from something light to something they tried way too hard to make sound majestic.

Just one more thing to get used to.

Was going to listen to live streaming of the Jays game online, but MLB doesn't allow it. Tried atdhe.net, and found out that they have been shut down by Homeland Security in the US! Interesting times....

One of the stations that airs the game should pick him up. They would automatically gain his large audience and the ratings from a long-time show like this.

Couldn't find a more appropriate thread but;

I say good. What a disappointment they turned out to be.

The channel started off well (the all-day ticker is great), and the potential was there, but they lost a lot of good content.

Pretty impressive the talent that has come from there -- Friedman, Consentino, Micallef, Seixeiro, Cybulski, etc.

Agreed. But in the end of the day, the best talent went to the better outfits as the case usually is. I did find the ticker very handy in the early days but along came twitter and other avenues.

Looks like Watters is back - I heard him on the FAN 590 the other day on McCowan's show. He came across as a clown and the rest of the panel treated him as such. If he is going to be on that station, that will be a second show I don't listen to (haven't listened to the morning show with Brady in ages). I had never listened to him much before, and now consider myself fortunate.

I think he was just a guest on the friday roundtable they do. Like you say, the other panelists didn't really seem to take him seriously.

I really hope that is all it was and they don't bring him back too often.

So now that the Leaf games have moved from 640 to 590, any idea who's hosting what the equivalent to what Andy Frost's post game show was?
