... verrry interesting. It could be an 8 cap hit and a side 3.5 maketing revenue contract. Very cool if it's legal. And if they really do want him, never underestimate Shanny's pitbull-lilke pursuit abilities! We've seen it now with Babcock and then with Lamoriello. If he targets, he's got that blank-cheque behind him...

That doesn't even remotely pass the smell test.

Is it a joke?

Completely illegal according to the CBA.

It's only illegal if they can tie it back to the Leafs front office.

No. 26.3(c) makes it pretty clear that this wouldn't be kosher. Unless you would seriously try to argue that Rogers/Bell aren't owners or "Club Actors" as defined in the CBA they can't pay Stamkos outside of his contract.

I mean, the loophole you're talking about would have to be big enough to drive a truck through it. If this sort of thing were ok it'd essentially be akin to not having a cap because James Dolan and Geoff Molson could probably figure it out too.

When the 2005 CBA was signed there were a bunch of conversations on this board concerning the leafs doing things like offer players wives jobs, and throwing endorsement deals there way.  All of them have been thought of by the league and all are bad ideas.

If the Leafs were ever caught the punishment would be harsh.  Like multiple first round picks forfeited harsh.  At that point is it worth signing Stamkos?

Whatever they do to sign Stamkos, if it ends up being the case, I have no doubt that it will clear the CBA without penalty.  Lou won't allow himself to be bitten again.

Its been a long, long road with LOTS of heavy debate and speculation.  When do we cue the Final Jeopardy music?

Then their options are to offer him a number of years, offer him a total contract value, structure the payments within the confines of the CBA and potentially work out some sort of NTC/NTC.

It's not really a debate. The CBA is very, very clear about what players can be offered.

And it's not like they can do anything like this on the sly. If Stamkos signed for 8.5 it would be microscope time.

That's not to say people are looking into the possibility, but they'll surely conclude it's impossible.

So, I think we can safely say Bob McCown's sources aren't any good. Or, at the very least, they're not in the team's front office. Either way, there's no way this makes it past Pridham, as it's clearly a violation.

The truth is that Bob McCown should be fired, no matter if it's true or not; since he can get his employer in trouble for just mentioning it.

I have a bit of a hard time believing that the management team that managed to trade Clarkson and Phaneuf without leaking a peep about it in advance would not only attempt blatant cap circumvention but also keep such a crummy lid on it that McCown hears about it.

His last 2 "scoops" in the past couple weeks or so have been suggesting that Leafs will violate the CBA and that Jose Bautista's annual golf tournament has been canceled because Jose expects to be traded and that was quickly debunked by Jose himself.

Any Toronto area snipers that want to shoot this week 11-1 & 3-5 at MCC @GGSunited #LegendsCamp message me for more details

Brain Lawton (former TBL-GM) joined TSN 1050 this morning to reiterate that he thinks Stamkos is going to be very compelled by the idea of playing at home.
