Tank Nation: Matthews Edition

I really don't get how we have a combined 9 games in hand on Edmonton, Buffalo, and Columbus at this point in the season. Especially when like half of our season has been on back-to-backs.

And Columbus keeps losing and Bobrovsky left their game last night midway through.

I don't get it either, I would  have thought the Leafs played more games.

I get what you're saying about that being strange but I totally get understand how it ended up this way. The Leafs schedule this year has definitely felt strange with the week long gap and all of the three full days off in a row recently.

In years past, you could almost count on a Tuesday Game, Thursday Game and Saturday Game with the odd Friday/Wednesday game mixed in.  Now with most facilities being Multi-Use I wonder if that has had an effect on hockey schedules.  Also, given the Leafs poor performance I wonder if that has played into scheduling at all by removing them from high profile nights (other than most Saturdays).

The Leafs' schedule after the ASG gets pretty intense. They basically play every other night for 2 months. Only a handful of 2 day breaks, and a similar number of back to backs. They won't really have time to catch their breath the rest of the way.

I think that will benefit the Tank.  If you don't have a lot of talent, then you need to bring the effort level each night.  Once they wear down, the ability to bring that effort level may be limited.

The old excuse was the Leafs have to play on Saturdays which was nonsense, but there have been a few weeks with no Saturday game this year too.

Good observation, and this week's Tu-Th-Sat schedule is the first one in a long time I believe, maybe the first of this season?

Third time this season. After the ASG, it will be the norm, though.

Is Pittsburg getting in the playoffs is my question?...I hope the Leafs will do their part in not getting a point for the rest of the season from them.

I really believe that those two teams are underachieving.

They shouldn't be that bad.

With both teams, it mostly comes down to goaltending. Lehner being out of most of the season hurt the Sabres, and a Talbot/Nilsson pairing hasn't exactly been a boon for the Oilers. Both teams are also pretty top heavy - not enough secondary or tertiary offence

I thought this was an interesting little article, the Leafs have updated the weight of every player on the roster.

Rielly weighing 217 at 21 years old is kinda crazy, he doesn't look pudgy either. That'd be 27lbs of what you'd assume is almost entirely muscle from the time he was drafted til now, very impressive.

Also impressive, he doesn't seem to have lost and speed or mobility through that process.

It all went to his head.
