Tank Nation: Matthews Edition

Leafs officially clinch the tie-break advantage over the Oilers (from the perspective of having the best odds in the lottery). Also, they've all but officially clinched a bottom 5 finish, as Vancouver has a head-to-head matchup with Calgary, and a regulation or OT win by either team puts them out of the Leafs' range.

On top of that, a loss of any kind to Columbus in their next game, the Leafs officially cannot be passed by the Jackets. This would also clinch a bottom 3 finish, regardless of the result of the Canucks/Flames game - but would also mean a single point gained by Vancouver would clinch the Leafs a bottom 2 finish.

EDIT: All this is assuming Vancouver loses in regulation to LA tonight. If they gain a point, then a Leafs loss to the Blue Jackets would clinch a bottom 2 finish. If Vancouver wins tonight, a bottom 5 finish becomes official, and a bottom 3 finish becomes all-but-official.

I like what you're smoking. Even with the Canucks getting TWO points

But what does it matter, really?  There's hardly any difference between 20% and 13.5%.  For that matter, no matter where we finish, our odds of getting the #1 pick are way less than 50%!  >:(

Once you fully grasp the forbidding math, as I have, it pretty much throws a big wet blanket over the whole proceedings.

Everyone knows the odds, we all fully grasp it. There is more to the lottery than the #1 pick.

Last places gives you a 52.5  chance at a top 3 pick v. 39.1 at 29th.

Then there is not falling further than 4 if they don't win a top 3 pick.

I mean, with that attitude, why even support a team? The odds of winning anything worthwhile is always small.

But what does it matter, really though? Why are we even on this planet? Is free will an illusion? Are we just pawns in a greater being's sick game of chess?

On a slightly related note but one probably not deserving of its own thread - how many guys have cored their first NHL goal this season? It must be some kind of (non expansion) record?

It's April 3rd and Todd McLellan is still trying to establish a "work ethic" for his team. Babcock did that in a weekend in September.

From Friedman's 30 Thoughts today:

McLellan wanted to cancel the players? day off on Sunday. But that was one of those predetermined CBA-mandated breaks. You can?t remove them simply because the team plays poorly. Instead, he grinded them on Monday. As one player said, ?We were told we were going to learn how to backcheck.? You?re not expecting those kinds of practises after Game 80.

And don't revoke the man-card. My wife had that stupid show on every day for years and I must have absorbed the opening.

Once again, it appears I've set my expectations a bit too high.  :o :P ;) :)

Flames pick up a point and still play the Canucks

The leafs can't catch the Flames at this point.  They have 73 points and hold the tie-breaker.  The Leafs can only reach 73 points if they win all of their games so the Leafs have now guaranteed a bottom 4 finish.  If the Leafs lose under any circumstance (regulation, OT or shootout) against Columbus tomorrow they guarantee they finish no worse than 2nd (and 5th via lottery).

Winnipeg scores with less than 4 minutes left to take their game to OT. I believe that point guarantees the Leafs a bottom-3 finish now.

6th is it not?  If it's just top 3 for the lottery and 3 teams above Toronto win it drops the Top 3 each down by 3.

(*sigh*)  Men just don't understand what we women like.  Besides,  it wasn't a "stupid" show, it was just a little more of a 'far-reaching' soap opera than some others trended.  And, oh yeah, it wasn't my overall favourite.  :)
