Tank Nation: Matthews Edition

They only need to lose one in regulation! Only one!

If we lose tonight the New Jersey game is going to be so weird to watch. Should I be happy when they score? I'm not even sure I know what that's supposed to feel like.

edit: who am I kidding, I'm not watching that game either

A loss tonight would be best, then you can wholeheartedly cheer for a big win against Jersey.  Although the way the Canucks are I can see the Oilers winning again so it won't matter if the Leafs win too.

Such a weird schedule to end the season.  Not sure they could finish against any 3 teams that elicit a "who cares?" more than Florida, Columbus and New Jersey.  With Philly just thrown in the middle.

We all know who they're picking in the top 3.

So say we pick 4th, who are you taking?

For me, Chychrun.

I like Chychrun too, and seeing him in the SSM/SAR series clinched it for me.  He's been rated around the 4-5 all season and he really stood out in the series to me.  He's a very good skater and big.

Yeah, Chychrun at 4.

Honestly, even if we drafted 3rd, I'd probably think long and hard about taking Chychrun over Puljujarvi. As a strictly Armchair GM, I don't exactly have a lot of evidence to back-up that stance. Just a hunch really. It's mostly a mixture of thinking that Puljujarvi is being a little overrated because of his WJCs and Chychrun is being a little underrated for a number of reasons.

So Laine is the consensus is we pick second?

I don't know that I would view Chychrun as the best player available at 4 but I don't think the difference between a Puljujarvi/Tkachuk is enough to overcome the fact that he's a good skating guy with size.  He's not Ekblad level good but I can easily see him as a guy who could slot in as the #2 guy on a team with Rielly.  That's really the big thing missing from the Leafs development pool at this point are a true overt #1 center and that #1 D-man type prospect.  If we draft 1st and get Matthews, great.  Marner plays on the wing and we have a stellar top 6 forward group with a nice pool of good players in the bottom 6.  If we can get Chychrun to completement Rielly/Gardiner that's awesome too.

I don't know enough about the prospects to have a super well-informed opinion but I'm a little concerned by how Chychrun seems to have fallen a little.

Which isn't to say not to draft Chychrun, just that if there's value in trading down a bit and still getting him or if Juolevi is just as high on their board there are other options worth looking into.

Seems to be. I'd also probably lean toward Chychrun at 4 now that the Pens' pick is likely to be closer to the end of the round.

Yeah I know we're not supposed to but I can't help but have his position effect my thoughts on him a little. And like you said it's not as if we'd be taking a massive swing just to grab a defenceman.

I know a lot of this depends on the team, but if he's still there after the 7th-9th pick then any chance the Leafs trade up from the Pittsburgh pick and if so what's it likely to take to get it done?

Sort of depends on where the Pittsburgh pick is, no?

It doesn't exactly get too detailed but this article looks at it a little bit http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/juniors/scouts-like-juolevi-chychrun-nhl-draft/:

Juolevi?s skill set and situation is an almost perfect counterpoint to Chychrun?s. Said one NHL scouting director: "Chychrun has all the tools, great skating, great shot, size, but you keep waiting for him to make plays and you?re left wanting more. Maybe the team is a bit of a factor. Maybe Chychrun would look different if he were playing with [a stronger team in London]. And maybe there?s a bit of hype to it?we heard about Chychrun before he played in the OHL. We?ve been seeing him for two years. He doesn?t make the Canadian team [for the WJC]. Maybe we?re just looking to pick him apart more."

Wonder if Chychrun's strong finish to his season will change some of the rankings. He had 25 points in his last 26 regular season games, and 8 points in 7 playoff games. Unfortunately for him his team was knocked out in the first round.

I know points aren't everything, but for comparisons sake Juolevi had 19 points in 28 regular season games and 3 points in 6 playoff games in that same period of time. And of course on a drastically different team.

Unless the Pens and pretty much every team who coudl slot in after them flames out in the first two rounds, the value probably isn't there to make that deal.

I'm as big a mark for the Knights as you can get.  I'm not super high on Juolevi.  I think he's a good player but I think his rankings jumping up had far too much to do with a very good Finnish team winning Gold.  Juolevi had a good tournament and Canada did the usual thing where they take a bunch of older players and ignore younger players because of "reasons".  If Chychrun was from out West I honestly think he would have made Team Canada or at least have been a lot closer.

Man, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm finding the finish to this season a little bit nerve-wracking.

Saturday night:
Toronto: 4-6-0 in their past 10. 15-23-2 on the road.  :D 1W streak  >:(
@
New Jersey: 3-6-1 in their past 10. 18-17-5 record at home  :D - L4 streak  :-\

This should be an awful game to watch. Hopefully NJ will honor their fans and put in an effort for their last home game.

Edmonton: 4-6-0 in their past 10. 12-23-5 record on the road. 1W streak
@
Vancouver: 3-6-1 in their past 10. 14-21-5 record at home. 1L streak

Another terrible game, but hopefully McDavid puts on a show.
Edit: I think Edmonton owes it to the rest of the league to win this game.
