I don't mind participant ribbons for kids in athletics. Even for adults I think it's cool. Not sure if any of you have ever entered a race but it's customary for all runners to receive a medal or some token at the finish line - even hacks like me got one and I have to say it was appreciated. Now, I'm bright enough to recognize the difference between being awarded for participating vs. placing in the podium. - I like to think my kids are bright enough too.

I'm going to assume that in your race they give out a first, second and third though. My kids soccer teams all get the same thing whether first or seventh.

Ah. Okay, that's a bit different then. So I assume then that you (like me) have no problem with every kid getting - something.

My kids are in basketball. They won the YNBA championship and apart from it looking a little different, they pretty much got the same medal as the team that came last. - I honestly didn't have a problem with that and I'm sure my kids didn't either.

I don't have an issue with everyone getting something. I just like to see those that win recognized in some way.

I realize that winning isn't everything but a good healthy competitive spirit goes a long way. I don't see that in a lot of kids out there.

I'm just trying to follow your logic here. If kids don't dress up for Halloween they'll get made fun of by other kids and that is bad.
But if kids are separated in sports by winners and losers won't the losers get made fun I by these same bad kids? Is it ok if those kids get made fun of cause they lost? But not because they don't dress up?
I know you might say you can't compare Halloween to sports but I think the same underlying reasons direct the decisions to cancel the Halloween parade AND to give everyone a participant ribbon

I suppose you may be correct.

I'd like to think though that people join team sports/sign their children up for team sports to stay healthy and to teach them to compete for what they want.

It teaches children the value of team work, leadership, and a good competitive spirit. Much like the school situation, if the parents an idiot, chances are that kid will be an idiot so I can kind of see your point there.

That being said, people don't go to school to wear costumes. It has little to do with learning or an education for a child.

The equivalent of no 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in a sport iskind of like every student getting an 'A' at school for showing up. Don't get me started on the fact that kids can't be held back anymore either.

It's not wrong. You and your kids are free to dress up and go out trick or treating for Halloween or to celebrate it any way you want, just not at school.

"Because you can't" isn't a reason.

uh, ok? I suppose you're suggesting that there needs to be a reason why our schools should indulge in a tradition of dressing up in costumes and giving out candy instead of, say, teaching?

Personally, I don't really get why it's such a big deal from either point of view. In truth, I bet most people who "celebrate" halloween (and I use that word loosely) do not do it for any religious reasons and therefore they should be allowed to do it at school.

Yeah there is a reason. Because it's fun for the children. Denying it to those children because there are other children who may not find it fun is backward thinking.

I never had a problem getting my lessons in while I sat there in my Halloween costume, so I don't know what that has to do with anything.

Quite frankly, I think they're right. It's not the kids choice. Why should those 10-15 kids feel left out and shunned by their peers because their parents choose to have different beliefs?

Not to state the obvious, but why should the other 500 kids miss out on Halloween and the costume parade?

My kid's school does Halloween and the costume parade and the kids who don't want to participate don't. Just like the kids who are Jehovah's Witness who don't stand for the anthem or have birthday parties.
My boys don't make fun of them they just know they do things their own way.

That's awesome that you raised your kids right....But not to state the obvious, but kids are cruel and not all kids are raised to be respectful of other people's beliefs. If their parents are beligerent, there kids will be.

Maybe the schools should educate children about their ignorant behaviour instead of just copping out.

Wow, I'm going to guess you don't have children.

1)The schools can only do so much.

2)Behaviour of children is not a school's problem. It is a parenting problem. School's deal with enough BS from unfit parents that having their kids dress up for halloween or not is one they'd just rather choose to avoid.

Did you know that their are 4 and 5 year olds in schools that are still not toilet trained? Did you know that their are kids that will destroy classrooms, hit teachers, hurt other children just for not getting what they want? This is not an issue of the school teaching them rights from wrongs. This is an issue(most times) of parents who should of never had children.

Why would a school want to bring in one more thing that could possibly seperate one kid from another?

The schools absolutely do have the ability to enforce anti-bullying policies. Behaviour of children At schools absolutely is a school problem.

What does having kids have to do with anything? You don't have to have kids to have an opinion about how to raise them, or how you think schools should deal with their behaviour. If I did have kids, I sure as heck wouldn't tolerate bullying on any kind, and would expect the school to do something about it, if it was my kid doing it or having it done to them.

I get your point although I don't know if I agree 100%.
Houseleague sports is obviously different from Rep and has a different stated goal. But this conversation would go on forever if we started talking about the purpose of youth sports.

As for kids getting held back in school I 100% agree.

Kids have to learn how to fail and how to lose. That is what is important. Anyone can respond properly when you are winning and succeeding. It how a child deals with adversity that prepares him/her for the future.

Well for one, I'm not saying you can't have an opinion. Schools do have anti-bullying policies in place. One way to prevent bullying is to remove situations which may result in bullying.

And you completely missed my point about the behavioural issues. A school can try to teach things to children about acting properly but without someone at home to support those teachings, it simply will not stick. Also, without a ground floor installed by the parents, the school is fighting a losing battle.

I was being diplomatic.

I've been working for a construction company for a little over four years now.  For the last two, I've realized this isn't working.  Especially when they shipped me up north.  I've been applying for jobs, get a call from the owner of Kingdom construction.  We talk, he hires me.  I give notice.  Then they say there's no job.  So now I'm without a job.  Anyone hiring?  LOL.

Sorry to hear about this.  I've heard numerous stories like this in recent years.  Scary economic times we're living in.

Yeah, it's pretty insane. My department at two different companies was downsized both times in the last 2.5yrs, and I was a casualty both times.

I recently was hired to a new company. They told me I would be a floater, filling in for people while they are away.

This is great and all, but there was no formal training. On day 1 they said for me to get out there and cover the person (who was already away). No instruction on procedure or what's required or where anything is.

Now because I haven't been trained on anything, there's very little for me to do. I'm just sitting on my hands and I'm antsy to make the company see me as valuable, but I'm afraid the little work they've placed on me will make me look bad as I'm not doing a whole lot. As you can tell :P
