Old news for most but I'm going to try to make my way through all of ESPN's 30 for 30. I just watched ep. 1 "King's Ransom" on the Gretzky trade. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I found it to be very, VERY good. A lot of stuff there I didn't know.

I have the box-set all 30 are awesome. Check out the one about Colombia at the '94 World Cup - I think its called "Two Escobars" or something

Yeah I've heard that's a great doc. It's been recommended quite a few times but I'm lazy.

How much was the box set? Sounds like a potential gift to myself.

I got it as a gift last Christmas but it can't be more than $60 (just a geuss)

Amazon has it for $42

That's just for vol. 1. All 30 films are 84.

Personally I'd say the five best were:

1. The Two Escobars
2. No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson
3. June 17th, 1994
4. Winning Time
5. Once Brothers

Past that I think there are some good ones but there's also 10 or so that I thought were pretty weak.

Whoops - so it's probably around $100 in store then?

I have to ask, out of all the 4 years of episodes so far, I  am perplexed and I am not sure if that was a deliberate ending tonight:To cut the universe chord, but not tell us if it fixed the earthquake issues? Or is that not relevant in the grand scheme of things?

I imagine the earthquake thing will essentially be resolved in the next episode. Last night's episode was really to set up the two-part season finale and tie up some other loose ends just in case they didn't get a 5th season.

Yeah you're probably right. Is it true it will be a 2 hr finale next week?

Yeah. It almost seemed like they were just flexing their muscles, wondered if it had anything to do with trying to get the ink on a season 5 contract.

Good news! Fox announced yesterday that Fringe will be getting a 13 episode, 5th (and final) season. As much as I would have enjoyed the show running longer, at least this way they get to actually create a true ending.

Most excellent!

Here's hoping the last season isn't a 'Lost' cause...

I've just finished the 3rd, small potatoes: who killed the USFL and found it great. So far, I find, I'm getting a real education with these.

Are there any Louis C.K. fans here? I'm asking because I've heard great things about his show "Louis" and got a hold of his first two seasons.

I'm almost at the end of season one and I think I laughed twice. I don't get it.

I've heard that he's a modern day Seinfeld but other than incorporating stand-up in his show, the rest doesn't work for me. Seinfeld stopped doing that himself after a few seasons.

Is there something I'm supposed to know about the guy that would make the show more funny? I just feel like I'm missing something that others are getting.

I don't know that there's some sort of magical key to getting the show. I'd say, however, that whoever described him as a modern day Seinfeld misrepresented as much as possible. They couldn't be more different as stand-ups and their shows are nothing alike. "Louie" isn't trying to be a typical sitcom.

The best way to think of it is of a series of shorts. Louis CK has said that there are some of them that aren't intended to be funny at all.  Some of it goes for absurdity, some for poignancy and others for more traditional comedy.

It won't be for everyone's tastes but I think it's one of the better things on TV.

Just had to chime in that I think Louis C.K. is a standup genius imo. I think he's, to some extent, a spiritual successor to George Carlin.

I think Louis has more of a stake in it than Carlin, fwiw ( if you take George seriously, that he saw himself outside the human condition in a lot of ways ) but yeah, count me as a fan.

Louis has described 'Louie' this way, and yeah, it's not a sitcom...

?It?s not like other shows, and I don?t mean to brag,? he said in a telephone interview. ?I just mean that it?s hard to describe.? He said the show would combine short autobiographical comedy films, about his life as a single divorced father and a comedian, with segments of him performing stand-up routines that would be thematically tied to the films. ?It?s very vignette-y,? he. said. ?It?s very v?rit?. All those French words. I use ?em all.?

'Lucky Louie' would be more of a sitcom thing, though long since cancelled. I like Pamela Adlon in both, fwiw.

Ahhh, ok.

I obviously had the wrong impression going in and can see what you're saying.

I was ready to give up but now it seems more interesting and I probably would have enjoyed the shows that I watched more if I had known that. I just kept hearing this Seinfeld comparison and thought I'd check it out.

I knew I had to be missing something.

Thanks for the reply and to others that took the time to answer.

This is a pretty interesting audio interview with Louis CK and Marc Maron. It's long, 2 hours in total, there's a lot of background on CK's life which I found illuminating but also some specific discussions about 'Lucky Louie' and 'Louie' from section 5/8 on.

Hey thanks for that!

Just watched the pilot for the new Ricky Gervais show 'Derek' and it was absolutely fantastic. Some people thought he was making jokes at the expense of the protagonist and I don't see it that way at all. I laughed and I came close to a tear, I hope they make it into a series.
