The Official TV Thread

I'm going to try Hasan Minhaj's Patriot Act out

Low key hoping that it crosses over with QE on the regular because this was both hilarious and educational.

I don't know if anyone here listens to The Watch podcast but they had an interesting discussion a while back about how the explosion in competition among streaming services and the success of Game of Thrones means we're going to see an ungodly amount of big budget fantasy series in the next few years.

Henry Cavill as Geralt sure is something.

Amazon gave me a 1 day deal on the Wire series Blu-ray, 50% so it was only $54 free shipping. Snapped it up in a nanosecond

Yeah, I saw the same deal. If I didn't already own the DVD copy and have a TMN subscription I probably would have gotten it. In fact, I still sort of regret not getting it.

But on the plus side, I did get this sweet pillow during the NHL store's sale the other day:

Good pillow to cry into when you realize you don't have the Wire on Blu-ray

I admit that I'm not much of an A/V guy but I have to confess that I don't actually know what the deal is with something being on Blu-Ray if it was filmed before things were shot for the format? Is it actually better picture quality? Or is it like how when you'd get an old movie on DVD it would still look like an old movie.

I dunno I was just being a jerk lol. Price was too good to pass up considering I didn't already own it.  The show was actually originally shot in 16x9 format to "future proof" it even though it was originally broadcast in 4:3 format. Apparently the hd transfer is very good from everything I've read on it.

Old movie was shot on film. While film doesn't have pixels in the way we talk of digital now, the original quality of film actually scales really well when converted to digital and you can kind of compare.

So most old movies were shot on 35mm film which is roughly the equivalent of what you would get from a current 20 megapixel camera. Movies shot on 60mm film come in at 35megapixels etc. So actually the source quality of a lot of old film is probably better than most early digital recording.

TV usually used I think 15mm film and home movie cameras were 8mm. Also the quality of the cameras was much lower and that's why old TV and home cine doesn't translate as well to digital as movie.

If youve seen Dunkirk the movie there were two different copies of it shot on different types of film, one version was 35mm and another 70mm and if you were able to watch both you'd notice the 70mm had much more depth and was much more vivid.

Rest In Peace, Penny Marshall.

Those of us who are old enough to remember will 0 place Penny Marshall among some of television's most popular comedienne/actresses.  Many will remember her as the half of the comedic duo in the t.v. sitcom "Laverne & Shirley" of the 1970's.

Marshall was also one of Hollywood's first and most successful directors/producers, as she gravitated to directing among some very memorable movies  -- "A League of Their Own", amf "Big", both starring Tom Hanks and a host of well-known actors/actresses.

In that sense, one could state that Marshall was among showbusiness' s pioneering women both in the role she played and her work with films.

Of course, us fans will always know her role as Laverne, who along with Cindy Williams (Shirley), gave fans plenty of laughter week after week.

First there was Fonzie, Richie, Potsy, & the gang over on the "Happy Days", then came Laverne (DeFazio), Shirley (Sweeney), Lenny, et al.

Goodbye, Laverne.  Thank you for a decade of laughter.  We'll always remember.

So, I'm pretty sure I'm cutting the cord on cable TV. I watch a lot of CBC programming, but that streams free on their website. The big question: how do I continue to watch non-CBC Leafs games, legally?

I think your only option would be to subscribe to both the Sportsnet and TSN streaming services.

Assuming you're in the GTA and consider bypassing blackout restrictions from GameCentre to be illegal, then yeah that's it.

Depending on the amount of non-hockey content you want, there are also a number of internet-based television services, though some are tied to specific ISPs.

By legally, I really just meant that I'm willing to pay for legit services.  ;) If I pay for GameCentre, damn right I'll find a way to by-pass the blackouts. I'm geographically closest to Winnipeg and Minneapolis, but am in the Leafs' region.

Currently, we subscribe to Netflix and my wife just joined Amazon Prime. We're trying to drop the amount we pay in internet/TV and the options are pretty limited up here in the great white north. It's basically Shaw or TbayTel (the local provider). Both are good, but just ultimately too expensive.

I could probably live with: internet, Netflix, and some means to watch Leafs games (I'm not against using "free" streaming options).

I'd go with GameCentre/VPNs then. From my experience the quality is much better with that than using TSN/SN's streaming services too.
