Thanks for the enlightement as always Nikos, didn't ever hear about this dude but then again I hardly watch NBA.  I would think the "nikov" sort of warrants a non forced AK -41 reference. Also he does hit all over the place not unlike a real AK-47

-nikov is not an uncommon suffix for Soviet/Slavic last names, Shoshnikov does not have the initials A or K, and people generally don't refer to an AK-47 as a Kalashnikov. So, yeah, it's pretty forced. Extremely, even.

It is Soshnikov, isn't it?

Are you making fun of my shpeech impediment?

I'm usually the one getting corrected, so I take special enjoyment in doing the correcting.

As you'll notice in my post though, I wasn't entirely sure that I was correct.

Now that the world knows that I was indeed correct, and you were mistaken, I've now elevated my status and I think I should be given some sort of special thread lauding me for this.

Mods, please advise.

Good enough.

Dis is one tough forum.  He needs a nickname so lets give him one. Killer Macluski is already taken.

He doesn't need a nickname. You can't force a nickname. Since there isn't an obvious natural one, one will either present itself through his actions or it won't. That's how nicknames work. For everyone.

Everyone needs a nickname: however I acquiesce to both Nik and Busta and their great mind powers and let Soshnikov find his moniker.

His nickname is The Nature Boy because of woo.

Not an obvious natural one?  I'm afraid you're quite wrong there my friend.

I give you: Nikita Ohmygoshnikov.

But, who are the other Horsemen?

Marincin would be Arn Anderson, as he's not flashy or has a lot of personality, but gets the job done.

edit: although, Arn Anderson was known as the enforcer.  Do the Leafs have an enforcer right now?  Clune?

Players really don't need nicknames. Bobby Orr, Martin Brodeur, Nik Lidstrom...all pretty good players without one.

Where nicknames work are where they're simple and make readily apparent sense. They're alliterative or rhyming or whatever. Sid "the Kid". Alexander "The Great". Super Mario. The Finnish Flash. The Russian Rocket. Regardless, they tend to happen naturally.

AK-41?  Someone will eventually call him "The Sniper".

Neither of the two are likeable.  Better to just refer to him as "Sosh" (probably what the Leaf players will call him for short).

At the end of the day who cares what we call him as long as he keeps doing what he is doing.
Pretty exciting in any case.  Hyman and him are exactly the players that Babs covets.
Lets hope Nylander finds his next level of compete mojo.

This guy has flown under the radar.  Undrafted and suddenly he's turning heads.  I think as Leafs fans we should temper our enthusiasm though, he's still a kid.  There's been many a player that's been built up in the minds of Leafs fans only to disappoint later on.  That being said, it's encouraging to see so many guys coming and making an impact.  Leipsic, Nylander, Shoshnikov, Hyman. Other guys still on the horizon like Marner, Kapanen, Brown and whoever we draft this year.  Maybe the future is closer than we think?

Nice story by Chris Johnson on Sosh:

Adam Proteau had a good one too a couple of days ago that I'm not sure was posted:

http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=872831&navid=DL|TOR|home

Bit of overlap between the two. Proteau's had a nice story about him connecting with Clune:

Clune, who has spent time in the AHL and NHL this season and is one of the Marlies? go-to leaders, used his playful personality to earn the trust of Soshnikov, and recognized in him a familiar fire and sense of self-sacrifice on the ice that was especially endearing.

?When I first met him, the one thing you can see is that look in his eye ? he?s got a fire burning inside of him, and he?s got that aura about him that he wants it,? Clune said. ?He speaks that language, and right off the hop, me and him have that common bond. We?re cut from the same cloth. And he lacks a little bit of self-preservation, which I love. I love guys that are fearless. They?re aware of the repercussions, but he knows we get paid a lot of money to do what we do.?

Clune began helping Soshnikov with English by using his trademark good humour.

?He couldn?t speak much, and I taught him a couple of the essentials,? Clune said. ?Our captain is Andrew Campbell ? ?Soup? ? who?s been my best friend the past six years since we played together in Manchester. So the first thing you teach him is ?Shut up, Soup,? and the second is ?What?s up, Soup??. Those were his first two phrases, and we went from there.?

This is my favourite. What a nickname, by the way.
