Thomas Vanek traded to NYI

BuffNewsVogl: Sabres' Moulson likely out until after Olympic break, which impacts trade status http://t.co/dBlUB8MMn2

Unfortunate for Buffalo, as they might not be able to extract maximum value from this deal unless they re-sign Moulson.

For those keeping score at home;

Vanek w/ the Islanders: GP 16. G 6. A 6. PTS 12
Moulson w/ the Sabres: GP 18. G. 4. A 7. PTS 11

As Sheldon would say, 'Neener-neener.'

Vanek w/ the Islanders: GP 31. G 11. A 19. PTS 30
Moulson w/ the Sabres: GP 31. G. 8. A 10. PTS 18

What a difference a Tavares makes.

Gardiner+Franson+1st for Tavares.

Get 'er done Burkie! Nonie!

StapeNewsday: Sources say Thomas Vanek has turned down a substantial offer from the #Isles, who will likely move him by Mar. 5 deadline. Story to come.

What a twist!

Might as well trade Vanek. It's not as if the chances of re-signing him are greater if you hold on to him for the rest of the season.

They could plausibly still sign him on July 1 - not that I think it's going to happen.

poor islanders.  No one seems to want to play there.  I guess they are like Edmonton where they have to trade for players and hope they will sign there.

This is probably a good thing for the Isles.. may have saved them from themselves by not getting stuck with what was probably going to be a ridiculous contract to Vanek.

I don't know -- I could live with paying Vanek a crazy amount ($7 to 7.75 million) if it meant him riding shotgun to Tavares over the next however many years.

For how many years though? My concern for them was term.. he's 30 and I would bet they would go 7 or 8 years just to get the guy, which I think would be crazy.

Not sure what it would take, but Vanek/Kadri/Lupul would be a pretty amazing 2nd line.

I woundn't give up too much though, so it's probably a non-starter.

We wouldn't be able to fit him into our salary structure.

Not even moving someone like Raymond, ridding ourselves of McLaren and Orr and with the LTIR room we've accumulated from Bolland (maybe others?).

A very expensive 2nd line too.  7 mill + 5.5 mill + 5.5 mill =18 mill for just the second line.

Now that neither player is on the teams involved in this trade:

Vanek in NYI: 47 GP, 17 G, 44 P
Moulson in BUF: 44GP, 11G, 29 P

Where's your "neener-neener" now, Sarge?

I'm just now finding out what happened on deadline day ... Did buffalo manage to get more for Moulson than the Isles got for Vanek at the deadline?  I feel bad for the Isles ...

The Minnesota Wild acquired left wing Matt Moulson from the Buffalo Sabres for center Torrey Mitchell and two second-round draft picks.

Well, I'd say the new Sabres' GM is better at his job than anyone that was involved in the initial trade, so, yeah.

Isles have announced they are keeping the 2014 pick and will send their 2015 1st rounder to Buffalo to complete this deal.

Not coincidentally, they also reached an agreement with Halak on a new contract.

Yeah, the decision on the pick really hinged on whether or not they signed Halak. He should be able to keep them out of the bottom-5 I think as long as they add another defenceman and get a bit of luck (ie Tavares is healthy).

At the very least, he should keep them from being serious contenders in the McDavid/Eichel sweepstakes, and that's probably enough for them to prefer retaining this year's pick.
