Sarge said:I'm still not convinced that trading back reduces the chances as opposed to increases the chances in this draft but hey, in theory, I suppose you're right.
Nik? said:Sarge said:Sorry. Really not following you here. :-\ Leafs like player X and then blamo!, he's gone. Now they're on the clock. I'm pretty sure they have a board they have a bunch of plans at that point to either take another guy they like or trade back.
That's the point. I'd assume that the dozens of front office elves will be fairly familiar with the top players in the draft. When they have to make a decision the task in front of them will be assessing who's left and deciding who their guy is.
Bullfrog said:I doubt there's much assessing done at the draft (for the 1st round), especially considering they're in the top 5. Any decisions will be whether they trade up or down, and this will determine their moves. With respect to what player to pick, that'll all be predetermined.
Newbury said:There's some intriguing prospects in this draft. I'm hoping for one of Galchenyuk or Forsberg with our fifth, but I've been thinking about our second rounder recently.
I haven't seen much of him, but does anyone know much about Tom Wilson on Plymouth? He had 27 points in 49 regular season games to go with 141 PIM, but played at a point-per-game pace in the playoffs, leading the team with 13 points. He's also 6'4 and 195lbs. A couple mock drafts have him going late first. Anybody know anything more on him?

I posted a profile that was written about him a little while ago:

Like you said, he'll probably be going at some point in the 20's, so we'd have to trade up in order to pick him. He sounds a lot like Tyler Biggs though, somebody who could very well top out as a very good 3rd line player if his offense doesn't translate to the NHL. And while that's certainly not a bad thing considering the other elements he can bring, I wouldn't be nuts about Burke taking a player with somewhat limited potential two drafts in a row.
If we move up with our 2nd round pick I would hope it would be for someone with a higher offensive ceiling like Martin Frk, Tanner Pearson, or Phillip Di Giuseppe. Or one of the top-2 goalies if they fall that far.
Potvin29 said:In the latter 1st/early 2nd round, other than the 2003 draft (and any players who fall for injury concerns/other reasons) aren't you pretty much going to be drafting someone with limited potential? Sure they could turn out better than expected, but you're not likely to be getting a high end offensive talent, at least not one that isn't Robbie Schremp-ish.
Watching will be Team Canada GM Kevin Lowe, president of hockey operations for the Edmonton Oilers and owner of the first pick in the upcoming NHL draft.
He?s here to get an up close and personal chance to evaluate Murray. Behind the bench will be the rumoured next coach of the Oilers, Brent Sutter.
?Did you see him?? Lowe said of Murray?s workout with Team Canada on Saturday.
?Just from one practice, it was obvious he doesn?t look at all out of place. He was very composed out there.
Sarge said:He might not be there @ 5. I can't see the Leafs and Oilers swapping picks if Murray is indeed their target. That said, if they do trade down for Murray ahead of the Leafs, it means we're going to get one of the top forwards so... Yay?

Edmonton could stay where they are and yes we would still get one of the top forwards... unless that is what you meant.

I was reading THN's draft preview, and while a small sample size from the scouting world, Galchenyuk would be my preference after Yakupov. Based on what the scouts were saying, I am even more firm in my stance that I don't want to see the Leafs have anything to do with a d-man at #5 unless the "big four" forwards go ahead of us.
