Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

I'm curious about what would happen if Moore and Kapanen switched roles.  Kapanen's biggest strength seems to be his ability to transport the puck from dzone to ozone, which is a skill that's hard for him to use on the left and is skill that's less necessary with Tavares and Marner on the same line.  It just seems like that skill could be better exploited on the third line.  Moore's ability to hunt down pucks and apply pressure might allow him to do the Hyman role in fairly similar way to Kapanen ...

Of course, if the idea is to inflate Kapanen's value and then trade him, I'm all for that.  I just don't believe Babcock ever gives up short term results for longer term benefits.

I'm also impressed by Timashov's presence.

It's a good sign if the leafs can develop those late rounders into viable options in the bottom 6.  It's also got to be great motivation for the Marlies to work hard to improve.  They have a couple of examples of what can happen if they work at their craft over the years.

... still, I wonder whether

Timashov - Spezza - Petan/Agostino

would be the superior fourth line in terms of goal differential ...

Whenever I watch Moore play I see him do the same thing as Kapanen- transport the puck from dzone to ozone.  He's the main reason why the 4th line had great possession numbers when he was in the lineup- doing exactly that.

Kapanen would likely take better advantage than Moore at having such strong playmakers on his line and thats the reason why you keep him there.  Also, I think Kapanen is better defensively and Tavares line will see more difficult matchups.

I wouldn't be surprised if when Hyman returns, Kapanen doesn't lose his spot.  Rather unlikely considering Babcock's man-love for Hyman, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Anthony Stolarz on waivers. Only makes 750k, he's 6'6", anyone think Leafs should take a flier on him?

Both Petan and Agostino have looked good..i don't know how they both stay on the team without some surprising cuts or moves..

1) None of his stats look particularly impressive.

2) That extra $50k might actually be too much for the Leafs to absorb especially if they plan on keeping Sandin up all season.

3) I think after not getting his way with the back-up last season (and it eventually being proven he would have been right) Babcock is going to have final say on it this time around. And unless someone else really stands out he'll prefer to have a more veteran/experienced goalie as back-up. Someone better suited to only playing 20 or so games.

If only the Leafs had two nickels worth of cap space to rub together.

Guess they can wait until just before season start to see all other teams with goalies on waivers but the guy they potentially pick up would replace Hutchinson's 700k so it would have to be a guy in the same salary ballpark

Makes sense but I'm not sure how much of a "final say" Babcock would have considering he's believed to be on thin ice already with the GM. Also would an experienced veteran guy be making only 700k?

Well I'm specifically referring to Hutch there (or if he would have stayed healthy, potentailly Neuvirth). I don't really see them claiming any of the young, unproven goalies like Stolarz or Forsberg or Jarry and playing them over Hutchinson at this point.

I could see them going with Jarry.  Financially it makes sense as his 675k cap hit is LESS than Hutch and allows us to upgrade from Holl for the 7th D/21st roster spot when healthy.  Numbers wise, he seems pretty equal to Hutch.

Would the Leafs fear losing Hutch on waivers as well?  If not they could send him down when claiming someone else.  If someone else doesn't work you always have the option of calling Hutch back up again.
