Gauthier: $675,000 AAV
Marincin: $700,000 AAV

This helped earn them a place on the team.

And outplaying similarly priced veterans.
Have to agree. Both have improved over last year. Will they keep it up? Don't know but they can be replaced if need be.

It's interesting - certain posters (or maybe a poster) on this board are always saying the few hundred thousand we overpay on each of the big contracts doesn't make any difference. Well, here's where it makes a difference. We wind up with Gauthier and Marincin, and probably have to go through the season with little to no wiggle room in terms of carrying spare players.

I don't have anything against Gauthier and happen to think he's perfectly fine as a 4th line center if he can also PK. Would it be nice if he was more of an offensive threat? Sure, but one thing this team doesn't lack is offense.

As for Marincin...he hasn't looked bad during the preseason but I'm still not sure of him. Sandin looks like the real deal, though. Someone in one of the threads commented that he might already be better than Dermott and I might agree with that, though we'll have to see how he holds up playing everyday.

Mikheyev looks terrific and I've liked what I've seen out of Korshkov as well. Ceci hasn't looked bad either, though the preseason competition hasn't been very strong. I think he is a key to the season.

What do people think of Barrie? I haven't been overly impressed, hope he picks it up once the real games begin.

If we picked up a maligned project on waivers or in a change of scenery trade, and developed him to the point of making a really good NHL roster in a depth role, we?d be extolling the Leafs? program.

Here we are building up Gauthier and Marincin to exactly that level (and still some room for growth). They both look better than last season.

Like I said, I've seen this movie before.

These guys have been in the Leafs' system for years now, and it seems that every year people are expecting Gauthier and Marincin to be better than what they are.

After the adrenaline of camp wears off, I'm guessing that these 2 regress back to their mean.  I feel like "new Gauthier" was already "same old Gauthier" last night.

You're guessing they'll regress. The leafs coaching staff are guessing they'll show progress. You guys should make a bet or something.

Gauthier hasn't progressed since he arrived within the organization.  His skating is improved but he is what he is at this point.  A big body who isn't physical and doesn't produce anything offensively.  He can penalty kill fine enough and as long as his salary is at that replacement level he's a fine player to flip in and out of the lineup but at 24 going on 25 he's not going to magically become a player who is anything more than a 12/13th forward.

So do we know what the Leafs' forward lines and defensive pairings are going to look like on opening day?  Also, who's the backup goalie this year?

Agreed, Goat is up on his speed level and is a good defensive option,  Marincin has surprised me, it's all about confidence with him as he certainly has all the physical attributes to do the job.  Oh and the Goat actually took a guy into the boards last night.  Not saying Gravel should not be in the mix there, he really impressed me as well.

The most significant thing, by far, to come out of this year's training camp is the emergence of Rasmus Sandin.

And that, my friends, calls for a song.

To say he hasn't progressed is a bit of a stretch. The fact that his skating has gotten better is admitting that he's progressed. The fact that he kills penalties at an NHL level shows that he has progressed.
I never said he'd magically become more than a 12th forward, but on every team there needs to be a 12th forward. If you can have one that help kills a handful of penalties a game at the league minimum, all the better.

Again, I think the regression is inevitable.

I try not to place too much value in a good couple of pre-season games.

Regression to what? a 4th line centre that kills penalties?

Yeah we have a different definition of regression.

Pay no attention to the stats of the preseason.

Nevertheless, there's a good sign in the team nestling into the good quadrant with Carolina. Stylistically, this iteration of the Leafs is building a similar profile of defense corps. with the Hurricanes: mobile, quick to the puck, short (multiple) outlets, option to skate out and join the rush, zippy team speed. The caveat is while we've been playing NHL vs NHL preseason games (as well as Marlies vs. NHLish teams) and cruising to domination, the teams we've played against are still trash.

Initially read this as confirmation he signed, but I still think this is likely. The fact that the Leafs haven't "released" him yet is a good sign for him. Could still be waiting to see if a body gets claimed on the next round of waivers too.
