Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

Game on TSN tomorrow at 5:30, hey hey it's only preseason but it beats Jays baseball right now

I kind of like watching preseason hockey. This year in particular there are lots of guys fighting for jobs. We get to see how the new guys mesh, and it?s hockey again after a full summer without.

I expect to see four split squad games with Leafs top Marlies bottom builds, and then four dialed in games with basically NHL roster and then Marlies + vets rosters to close out the preseason.

The sooner they cut things down the better. Right now the top PP unit is still split between the two groups (assuming they load up, which Marner's comments the other day indicated they would).

Not much to think about with split squads

Hmm... spitballin':

Rielly
Marner - Nylander - Matthews
Tavares

Barrie
Spezza - Kerfoot - Petan/Johnsson
Johnsson/Korshkov

Marner and Matthews worked on their off-sides in earlier PP practices, tuning up one-timers.

These were the two PP units at camp today:

Barrie
Marner-Tavares-Spezza
Korshkov

Rielly
Nylander-Petan-Matthews
Johnsson

So assuming Rielly and Matthews go back to the top unit, we're left with:

Rielly
Marner-Tavares-Matthews
X

Barrie
Nylander-Petan-Spezza
Johnsson

Maybe Johnsson goes to the top unit as well and we need another net front guy for the 2nd unit.

Both Kapanen and Kerfoot haven't been practicing with the PP units all camp. Leads me to believe that both will be more focused on the penalty kill.

Showing up to camp injured probably isn't the best way to shake the injury prone label.

Did we do this one already? These are pretty ridiculous and I would like to see them do Babcockisms.

It's not very promising when Neuvirth is already injured in camp.

I think that's it for him. With the cap situation how it is the Leafs probably can't afford to have a goalie who might need to make multiple trips to the IR.

They'll have to be watching the waiver wire, I don't think Hutchinson/Kaskisuo is very promising as options.  You never know, Malcolm Subban was claimed off waivers a couple years back.

I doubt we'll see a better option at $700k. I think we're stuck with Hutch.

We'll see how the first 20 games go, figure on Hutch getting 5 starts?

You're saying Hutch needs to be clutch?

Most people find it easy to play with Willy and Johnsson; Matthews is no exception.
