Training Camp

I agree, the lineup looks way better than a week ago. Really, my only significant change would be Frattin in place of MacArthur, who I'm sure could be easily moved for a decent pick or prospect.

I might agree with you, but I think it's the wrong time to make that deal. Frattin has slipped since his strong start with the Marlies, so I'd like to make sure he comes back to form, but also to see if MacArthur can re-ignite his chemistry with the Russian boys and increase his value.

I thought Marc Fraser was sticking around -- possibly Kostka/Fraser as the third pair for now with Komi as the extra; then when Gardiner is all better, we buy out Komi.

I think Kostka and Fraser (edit: and Orr) must be sticking around (maybe just until Gardiner gets healthy) because they'd have to clear waivers and there's no indication they got waived

Holzer, Frattin & Rielly are waiver exempt so two of them are most likely to be moving on.

MacArthur is an underrated producer IMO. He's far and away better than Frattin. Mac isn't that much older than Frats either.

I think the lineup looks better than a week ago sans Colton Orr.  Orr is not a useful player in the NHL and should not be getting any ice time.  I hope that is the case.

If we're being fair, I think we need to wait and evaluate Orr on his play this year (assuming he plays, of course).  If the reports of his skating improvement are accurate, and he's not simply a boxer with skates, then he'll bring strong forechecking, taking the body, and the occasional fight to the lineup, which is needed in my opinion.  The days of dressing him just to beat up Carkner are over, but if he can give 7 minutes of strong 4'th line play (plus some penalty killing, if reports are right) then I welcome him to the lineup.

I honestly think it is a pipe dream to think Orr can reinvent himself as a good penalty killing skater.  He is going on 31 years old, skills don't usually improve at that age, usually for fringe players they erode rather quickly.

But yeah, we can wait and see, but I am highly suspect that he can add any value.

Yeah, I like Mac, he's a solid player. He's not going to win NHL awards, but he seems to bring it most nights and when he's flyin', he's fun to watch with Grabbo and Kuly.

So, it's looking more clear today who our players are going to be....I hope I'm not forgetting a forward here.

Lupul/ Bozak/ Kessel
MacArthur/ Grabovski/ Kulemin
van Riemsdyk/ Kadri/ Komarov
Brown/ McClement/ Steckel
Orr

Gunnarsson/ Phaneuf
Liles/ Franson
Gardiner/ Komisarek
Kostka

Reimer
Scrivens

Question is, are they going to keep an extra forward, or a defenseman? Frattin or Holzer will most likely be on pins and needles today. I think Kostka will make the team, because of his strong play and waiver ineligibility, as I think somebody is waiting to snag him.

If Gardiner is out for the first few games, do they give those games to Rielly and then send him back when Gardiner is ready? Or does Rielly go back right away and the keep both Kostka and Holzer, maybe forcing them to find a trade, before Gardiner is back?

Is Holzer exempt? He just has a one-way, which should not be confused with his waiver status. If he's not waiver exempt, Carlyle will have to go with him, as he would surely be grabbed.

What do people think will be the way the last cuts go today?

My guess is that your forwards look like what they'll keep with Frattin getting sent to the AHL (probably short term)

The D is the bigger mystery for me. Holzer is waiver exempt so he's probably heading to the AHL as the others haven't been waived.

Gardiner is injured so they can have 24.

Gunnarsson Phaneuf
Liles Franson
Kostka Fraser
Komisarek

And Rielly might get to play his five games until Gardiner returns. He might not if they feel they must get off to a good start with minimal rookie errors by the D.

To make room, maybe Franson is traded.

I think they may like Fraser because he helps team toughness and he may be an upgrade on Komisarek.

Both Nonis and Carlyle seemed to imply that Franson was a part of the future here, but I guess it could happen.

Maybe, as I didn't know that players sent down had to have already cleared by 3pm. I thought they could include players on waivers to at noon, so maybe he has already been placed on the opening night roster.

mirtle: Hearing Rielly and Frattin will be the Leafs cuts today to get to 23-man roster. Practice starts at 11:30 so we'll know for sure then.

The 5 PM deadline is really a soft deadline. Teams can still put guys on waivers that they don't expect to have on the opening night roster, they just have to be able to get down to 23 guys with those guys still on the roster until they clear. So, the Leafs could send down guys who are waiver exempt, waive someone like Fraser and bring someone back up tomorrow when he clears.

Okay, so I wasn't far off. Mirtle puts it all to rest really, if those are the cuts, then it's really a done deal for 3pm, right?

If Reilly is the only D cuts, don't the Leafs have too many D-men? (even with Gardiner injured?)

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Liles - Komisarek
Kostka - Franson
Holzer
Fraser

although if Steckel or Orr is the lone extra forward, I guess they can carry 2 extra defensemen...

Looks like they're carrying 8 D.

Komisarek trade?

(i'm hopeful)

Nonis, we could say, would be on a real roll to start his new job. I don't see it happening though, unless NYI call.

If he managed to trade Komisarek I would singlehandedly start the chant:

"Here we go Nonis, here we go" *clap* *clap*
"Here we go Nonis, here we go" *clap* *clap*

DarrenDreger: Expect majority of junior eligible players to be returned today or over the wknd. Toronto's Morgan Rielly is among them.

Likely forward lines tomorrow.

Lupul-Kessel-Bozak
Mac-Grabo-Kool Lemons
Jvr-Naz-Komarov
Brown-McLement-Orr

Steckel in grey and no Frattin.

Gardiner is practising.
