Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

I'm starting to lean towards Bryan Bickell over David Clarkson.  Probably cost a fair bit less, but brings even more size and is just a ridiculous competitor.  I think he will be more durable as well.

Why not both?  ;)

But seriously, why not?  I don't think cap room will be an issue, what with a move or two likely forthcoming.  It sure would feel similar to the summer the Leafs got both Corson and Roberts, although maybe a 7/8'ths version of that.

So with what I am reading on the hockey media sites, the Amnesty Buyout works exact same as the regular buy out (2/3 of the original spread over twice the length of the contract) except that it doesn't ever count against the cap?

I thought that it meant that the team had to payoff the whole contract at once, kind of like a signing bonus.

So does that mean if the Leafs traded Liles to Vancouver for a 1st pick, Luongo and Bies...ummm...a defenceman to play with Phaneuf that it would only cost the Leafs $1.5 MIL extra a year.

Also does that mean that the Leafs could buyout Dipietro for $1.5 MIL a year as well and maybe get their 1st pick for Komisarek?

Well OK, ignore the specifics of the trade. Is my understanding correct?  Or is my original expectation that the team coughs up all the money at once correct?

@LD10: Rossi on @TSN1050Radio - Toronto has emerged as a preferred landing spot for Letang. Penguins want at least 1 roster player/prospect/1st

Sooooooooooo

Seriously though, if true, it's tempting...but not if Letang walks after one year.

Depending on the price, if Letang's willing to sign an extension, that's definitely something you have to explore.

Moving Phaneuf would be a must though, right?

Not necessarily. Depends on the cap implications and what he'd be looking for extension-wise. A top pairing of Letang and Phaneuf would be pretty good, if the Leafs can make it work under the cap without sacrificing too much depth.

Kulemin a prospect and a pick might get it done i think.

That really depends on who the prospect is. They'd likely want Gardiner or Rielly, and, at point, I'm not sure it's worth it, since both these guys have potential to be Letang-lite type defencemen, and soon - and, they'd be much cheaper than Letang will be. Tough decision to make there, if that's the case. Does Letang improve the team enough and for long enough for it to be worth it? I'm not sure.

Twitter is currently exploding because Letang said Toronto would be his preferred destination if he gets traded.

*edit to add

He also said his first choice is to stay in Pittsburgh

Also its now on TSN

Getting Letang would take a first-rounder, a top-nine (leaning towards top-six) roster forward and, I would think, definitely either Gardiner or Rielly.

And it would probably be worth it.

This is how I read it.  Talk of having to add a good forward and a 1st along with one of those guys?  No way I say.  2 of those 3 things at most, and only if getting an extension done here looks very likely.

Imagine 3 good assets for him and he walks next year (along with possibly another player we gave 3 good assets to get) I think I would be done.

You know who's a guy I want? - Stalberg.

Edit: I think I like him over Mac on the 3rd line. Could also be a better asset on the PP and fill in better in the top 6 better. He's also much quicker.

Was he not doing a lot of whining in the playoffs about not playing?

I don't think we need assets for the PP to replace Mac.  I think we need to replace him with a player who can do more than just provide so so offense.

I admit. I tuned out much of the playoffs following the Leaf's exit. It wasn't until a couple games into the final that I got back into it. Having said that, I really liked what I saw from Stalberg this year (playoffs not withstanding.) - I think he's a better player than Mac.

Apparently, the Hawks are already shopping Bolland...

I like him as a player, maybe he's another target, proving the cost is reasonable. Lots of potentialities this off-season.
