Anybody want to start a Repatriate Colaiacovo to Toronto petition now that he's been waived by Detroit?  :)

I want him back, but didn't start that as a lot of regulars know Cola is a fav of mine lol it's a shame that he got hurt often and had such bad luck with the injuries he got, his hits were awesome and I enjoyed his style of play early in his career.

Pass. I'm not romantic enough to get past the fact that he can't contribute to a NHL team any more.

Bingo!

I still like his basic ability. Ignoring his health, I'd take him over Kostka as a depth dman on the basis of his talent because he can still skate and play, put up some points and play defense. But the guy is somewhat broken. He's never played more than 65 games for a team during his pro career because he's still getting hurt. It's too bad because I thought he was a decent player.

He played 67 games for the 09-10 Blues!

Seriously though, I'd take a flyer on him at the minimum or close to it. He's only a year removed from playing 19 minutes a night for the Blues and only 30 years old. I don't know that I'd write him off as unable to contribute on the basis of one season.

A two-way deal? Well, maybe I suppose.  :-\

Unless you're planning on giving him a contract that pays him more than a million I don't think there's any difference between a two year deal or a one way deal other than financially. If he would be on board at 750K I don't care if he makes it with the Leafs or the Marlies.

On a two-way deal, he'd have a chance to prove me wrong though, no?

I'm not following. What do you think is the difference between a one way and two way deal?

I watched him playing with the Blues a few times. I didn't seem him in Detroit much. When I saw him, I thought he was pretty good - better than some Leafs dmen.

I think he's seriously injured every major appendage on his body. He played 6 games last year but before that, you could almost count on him missing 1/4 of the season. When a guy has been that banged up, even though he's 30, I think you have to treat him like  getting a 36 year old on his last legs.

He was only getting $2.5 mil for next year and Detroit walked away which should tell us something.

I certainly wouldn't be terribly distressed if they signed him because he's quite versatile. I just have my doubts he'd ever make it through a long playoff run. If he could stay healthy, I'd take him over Liles in a heartbeat ... but it doesn't appear that we can rely on that.

He could go up and down without clearing waivers, right? Or, am I wrong? If I have that right (and I'm not sure I do) he could get the opportunity to prove he's fit and then get the call-up without losing him to waivers. - If I'm wrong, then I'll just stick to my guns and say he probably isn't worth the roster spot or cap hit.

Nope. The only difference between a one way and two way contract is that a two way contract allows for a player to make a different salary in the AHL than in the NHL.

Still, as I mentioned, if he'd be willing to sign at a price like 750K there'd still be no risk. Either he makes the team out of camp or he doesn't and you send him down. If someone claims him on waivers then the team loses nothing.

I think everybody has to clear waivers on a call-up once during the season.

Only have to pass thru waivers going down. (Unless a rule changed I am not aware of.. quite possible)

Last I remember, re-entry waivers were eliminated in the new CBA.

Dang. I knew the salary component but I feel bad for not knowing there was no difference in the waivers.  :-[

The only times waivers comes into play for two-way deals is for players who would otherwise be waivers exempt, but are earning more than a certain threshold in the AHL. It's an extremely rare situation and not really worth worrying about.
