Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

I'm not sure that speaks so much to Kulemin's talents as much as it does to Neal and Malkin being superstars.

How many people would like to see Kuli on the 1st line here (I don't buy that Crosby's line is the #1)?

Well yeah, offensively he would be the passenger on that line. However he does do a lot of other things really well that would make him a nice complementary piece there.

I'm starting to wonder if Kulemin needs to be moved. Virtually no offence and while he's not paid a ton he's paid too much for close to zero production. I also wonder about McClement.

The problem with this roster is there are offensive players who don't play much D and Defensive forwards who don't score at all. Then there's a useless 4th line that doesn't do either. That's a major issue.

Honestly, I love McClement but he's a 4th liner with ability to fill in other lines occasionally while also being a premier pk specialist, nothing wrong with him as long as he's fulfilling his actual role.. and moving Kulemin would have everything to do with what his contract demands might be, which at this point is fairly unknowable.

Sure, but I'm not sure that puts him in exclusive company. There's probably at least, to throw out a number, about 30 players who could do the same with those 2.

In: Fransen, Fraser, Rielly, Phaneuf, Gardiner

Maybe: Gunnarsson, Phaneuf, Franson, Liles

Out (trade): Gardiner, Liles, Fraser, Ranger

Thoughts?

Phaneuf is, by a wide margin, the team's best defenceman. Fraser and Ranger are the team's worst.

Can't Trade - Phaneuf, Rielly
No Value - Fraser, Ranger
Potentially Tradeable - Gardiner, Gunnarson
Unlikely without contract in return - Liles

Also - we play shorthanded every game with 3 lines, or 4 and then in our own zone the majority of that shift.

Well, I think I am going hang out here in fantasy land for a bit as the Leafs in reality are worse than I hoped.

I am not going to be too realistic except I will be keeping the total roster salary under the anticipated cap of $74 million.  I won't be adding any players who have won individual awards or have been in the top 10 in scoring in the last 3 years.

So I guess I am going to add players who aren't being rumoured available and will remove players from the Leafs roster who I don't think fit my ideal team.  I apologize in advance to those humans here that hate this kind of stuff.

I am with you lamajama.  I had a friend here PM me a couple of days ago about armchair GM stuff and I sent him my lineup I kept Reilly and Phaneuf for the top 2 LH dmen and put Fraser and Franson on the 3rd pairing and left Ranger as the 7th dman as I feel he has no trade value.

Phaneuf / ??
Reilly / ??
Fraser / Franson
Ranger (or Marlie)

I feel that on the current team it is Gardiner and Gunnarsson who are the tradeable assets on defense without hurting the Leafs too desperately.  Put some top Marlies or top prospects with them and see if a couple of stabilizing RH dmen can be brought in.

I hope that Liles could be moved without keeping any of his salary or getting a boat anchor back.

I knew that Clarkson couldn't fight as I have been watching him for years.  What I didn't realize was that he was so bad in his decision making.  I don't know if Nonis can 'Versteeg' him like Burke did with Kris when Burke realized it wasn't a fit.  I thought Clarkson would fix my 'Chris Stewart' obsession but it has only made it worse.

Yikes I forgot about Franson.

He would be in the Potentially Tradeable category but diminished return due to contract status.

Yeah, I'd definitely be interested in that. Not sure the Islanders would be too keen to give away a recent top-5 pick though.

Dreger said the Islanders are sniffing around Gardiner?

Gardiner for Strome.

*high fives self, chugs beer*

Would be a "Strome" run for Nonis.

*Good bye*

*high fives Potvin on his way out*

I actually think it would be a pretty fair trade for both sides.  Strome isn't a guy the Isles should be unloading but for a Gardiner it might make sense.

I would feel much much better about our future up the middle with a guy like Strome on the depth chart.  Although Gardiner is at the top of our defensive depth chart, it is in much better shape than the forward group.

Not that I think it's really an unbalanced deal or anything, but this is the Islanders we are talking about here.

7. The details are hard to pin down, but, at some point last season, the Florida Panthers came pretty close to pulling off a deal that would have sent Dmitry Kulikov to Toronto. One of the teams backed away. But it would come as no surprise to see this conversation rekindled. Kulikov certainly has talent yet is inconsistent. Could he benefit from a change?

Kulikov's defensive game is . . . ummm . . . questionable. He's struggled since coming back from knee surgery late in the 11/12 season. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the Leafs that backed away when they realized the price Florida wanted them to pay wasn't worth the return.

Perfect for the Leafs then!
