Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

This year from steen is an abberation, like that of jason blake.  He won't be hitting 40 goals again.

That's assuming that goal scoring is what defines Steen's ability as a player, when he's more of a do-everything sort of player that excels in whatever role he's put in.

A compromise 69.5 cap and shedding skin, well, except for Kulemin and Komarov... two inexperienced dmen plus two wingers still needed...

Kulemin and Komarov are definitely the two guys I'd like to see return.

I want them both back as well. One more thing for you to think about, Reimer. Our goaltending was not the problem this year, we had one of the best pairs in the NHL. I myself hope Reimer stays. I don't think Shanny lets him go, and with RC soon to be gone he will opt to stay on.

He didn't seem to excel in any role with the leafs; hence why he was traded.

The coach wasn't a fan and the GM was easing into senility- hence why he was traded.

That roster looks pretty good. Why break-up JVR and Kessel though?

Nice looking line-up, although I would worry about who our penalty-killing forwards would be. Bozak, Stastny, and JVR can all handle minutes there but it might not be the best idea to play our top-6 forwards too much on the PK. Obviously D'Amigo would be another if he gets inserted in. I don't know much about Pouliot but he doesn't kill penalties in New York. I think guys like Holland and Bodie are capable defensively but it's not really either of their strengths.

I think the Gleason buy-out has to happen this off-season.  It's a big help.

And I would LOVE adding Niskanen + Robidas.

Yeah, you get big savings with a Gleason buy-out. Especially since he can be easily replaced by somebody making about $1mil (like Weaver). That should be a no-brainer.

Robidas has been somebody that I've wanted going back to last season, so I'd be very happy with that signing. Niskanen worries me because he'll be the crown jewel of the of the defensive market this summer. Somebody is going to pay him big money, like $5mil+ I think and that can't be Toronto.

I don't know if that's a contender, but I like the veteran upgrade on defense, and that 2nd line center upgrade with Statsny. Certainly looks better than the team that was iced this season.

Preliminary attempt for next season.

I went with keeping Bolland on a 1 year deal. Significant trade with Winnipeg, Reimer, Lupul, Holland +. Smaller deal with St. Louis and a bit of luck with free agents.

I'm not too sure about the cap hits, but I thought I was even a bit high on a few of them. I think it's a significant upgrade in the bottom half of the roster up front and some stabilization on defense, I hope.

I actually think that Kane and Byfuglien could be had, no?

Your left over cap space concerns me, BWB.  No flexibility for injuries/trades/etc.
Plus, if the cap doesn't hit 71M, your roster might not even be feasible.

Man alive, I don't like this at all.  Available cap space is non-existent, it doesn't really address the forward group's defensive deficiencies, and it's largely (if not wholly) predicated on UFA signings.  I like the additions on defense, but with that lineup I think we'd experience deja vu all over again this time next year.
