Useless Thread

Maybe not quite worth it's own thread, but very useful information when travelling to the US from Canada:  If ever you use your VISA credit card in the US and are asked to enter your (non-existant) zip code, say at a gas station pump, enter the 3 digits from your postal code plus 00 and it will work.  So if your postal code is A1B 2C3, you would enter in 12300, and you're good to go.

VISA told me this before my recent trip to the US and it made life a lot easier at the gas stations in particular.  I can't say whether or not this is applicable to other credit cards too, though it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

I received a free weekend at Elk Horn resort, it's a timeshare thing but I know people that have gone before and its low-pressure and once you say no thanks, they don't ask again.

I like free stuff :)

Oh dear...

The worst feeling in the world is driving down the highway and in the distance you see a vehilce hit the ditch and rollover :/

Thankfully there was only one occupant and he was ok, besides being shaken up.

Woke up at 4am to the sound of sirens, looked out the window and the neighbor's house was on fire.  Started in the garage (on one side of the house) and it took all of 15 minutes and the whole thing was up in flames.  Everyone is fine and got out ok, but the house is done, including 2 cars in the garage.

We live in the country and houses on our street are far enough apart that it wasn't a danger to us or anyone else, but what a surreal and helpless feeling.  The family is just devastated. They ran out in house coats and flip flops and nothing else.. most likely everything they owned is gone.  :(

That's heartbreaking and sad.  I can't even imagine but the silver lining is that everyone got out ok.  Possessions can be replaced but lives can't.

oh that's awful. *hugs* Been there. We were eating supper at our dining room table and the sun was shining right in my eyes so I got up to pull shut the curtain......and saw flames coming out of the side window of the house across the street from us. Called 911. It took 'forever' for them to get here (less than six minutes actually, but like you said above, we watched helplessly as the house started to burn and it seems like it takes forever) My husband ran over, kicked down the door and shouted for people. We didn't think anyone was home cause their van was gone. Absolutely awful feeling made even worse when Steve came running down the street (the road was closed off because of all the fire vehicles) and saw it was *his* house.... He was just in shock, and then we all started crying when the firefighters brought out hamster cages with deceased inhabitants in it :-( "How am I gonna explain this to the kids!" Poor guy. Just terrible. And you're right, it's the most awful helpless feeling as you're waiting for the fire dept.

My suggestion to you, if you can do it, is to help the family with some immediate needs. If you can afford it, take kids out for some clothes/toys. Or organise a neighbourhood help in this regard. We talked to the local pet store who gave us supplies and two hamsters for the girls. Our neighbourhood got together to get them emergency clothes etc and took stuff to the cleaners for them and to WalMart/Zellers for other stuff. Luckily, their house wasn't destroyed but there was so much smoke and water damage a lot of stuff had to be replaced anyway. They had to live in a rented place for quite some time while the house was repaired, but their neighbours helped them put together all the sort of stuff you need in the kitchen (where the damage was).

Thank goodness your neighbours got out safely. Hopefully, they had insurance and their material needs will be looked after. Again, *hugs*, I know how awful it feels.

lol, the funny part is that I don't really care for her either to be honest. So I don't know what the fuzz is about. It's just weird getting messages like that from people you don't even know. I guess that I'll just ignore it.

Oh man, I just spoke to an international recruitment company who wanted someone to work as a consultant for a huge company. We talked about the salary demands, and I stated my demands, which was higher than it usually is in Sweden for that role. Then they got back to me later today, and they thought that I wanted that salary after taxes, and they agreed on it if I get the job.  ;D And my demand was before taxes.  :P
