We need Cory Schneider

To throw a new wrinkle into the mix.  I mentioned this in the goaltending conundrum thread.  I don't know this changes, if anything, but what if Schneider decides Vancouver isn't the place for him.  Maybe he wants to be closer to the East Coast where his family is.  :P

Well, yeah, there's that, too. I don't think Vancouver does anything with Luongo until they get Schneider inked to a multi-year deal. If he signs a 1 year offer sheet with anyone, there's a huge risk of him leaving as a UFA next summer if they match. It wouldn't surprise me if nothing happens with either goalie until later in the summer, or if Schneider is moved leading up to the draft because the Canucks know he's planning on moving on in the summer of 2013.

What makes you think Schneider wants to move once UFA (just curious)?  If that's the case, chances are the Canucks don't move Luongo and this discussion is moot.

Nothing in particular, but, if I were Schneider or his agent, I'd definitely be using impending UFA status as a hammer in any negotiations. He knows if he takes over as the starter anywhere for 12/13 and proves himself to be capable as a starter and put up similar numbers to what he has as a backup, he's in for a huge payday. If he doesn't get the contract and/or opportunity he wants in Vancouver, why wouldn't he make sure he keeps all his options open?

I agree, I just thought perhaps you read something that stated his intention to test the market.  He's spent a fair bit of time in Luongo's shadow that he may want to bolt somewhere else where he can be the man.... the million dollar man.  8)

Yup, and I expect one of them will be suiting up for a new team come October - it just wouldn't surprise me if it's Schneider and not Luongo.

It appears unlikely that Vancouver will start next season with both Luongo and Schneider.  If they trade Schneider, and Luongo gets off to his usual slow start, it will be an extremely difficult autumn for Canucks management.  Unless they get an unbelievable offer for Schneider, I believe that they will trade Luongo.  They will end up with a younger, cheaper, and (based on recent play) better goalie.

As Nick Kypreos pointed out, Vancouver cannot trade Luongo until they resign Schneider.  Otherwise, Schneider will have them at his mercy in negotiations.  Thus, this could drag out for quite awhile.

It is fascinating listening to opinions on what Luongo's value is.  I do not ever recall such a wide range of opinions.

On the question of age, I looked up some history:

-  Balfour was 37 when he joined the Leafs.
-  Cujo was 32 when he joined the Leafs.
-  Johnny Bower was 32, (but turned 33 in November) when he joined the Leafs.  He was part of the turnaround of a dismal team and led them to four Cups.

I'm going to beat a dead horse here and go on my own personal crusade but the answer clearly lies with:

Mikka Kiprusoff.

-  35 years old
-  Signed for 2 more years at $5.8M
-  Has played at least 70 games in last 7 seasons so the guys a workhorse
-  Posted a .921 SV% last year so he's not slowing down
-  Used to seeing a lot of shots and playing on "bad" teams
-  He's shown he can be a winner, lots of experience, used to pressure in a CDN market and he's well liked by fans and teammates

The nice part is, you don?t marry the guy.  He will for sure be very good for the next 2 years? that gives Reimer or Scrivens 2 years of a great mentor, and 2 years to learn and be groomed as possibily the starter.  It's a perfect fit.  Worst case, if in 2 years Scrivens/Reimer arent the answer then you can still re-sign Mikka to a 1 or 2 year deal? at 37 that?s not unreasonable (Nabokov is doing it right now for example).

Rumour has the Flames starting their rebuild and he could be avail? the problem is what they would want in return.

Though I'd be happy with Luongo, I'd be happier with Kiprusoff, given all those arguments.  The Leafs have a number of young goalies with potential.  It wouldn't be unlikely that one of them truly emerges in the next few years.  Luongo would potentially put us in a Cory Schneider type of situation in a few years, but then would be of an age that makes him far more unmovable.  Kiprusoff doesn't create that problem.

But what price would Calgary be looking for...?

Yeah it's the price that concerns me for Kiprusoff, as Calgary is going to need to get something good back to move him I think, as they are pretty thin otherwise.

I'm guessing it starts with at least one of Reimer/Scrivens/Owuya, with picks and/or prospects added on top.

Scrivens, 2013 1st, Kadri should get it done (too much for me imo though)

Now, let's say we added Kulemin to that offer, made the 1st lottery protected and were able to get both Kiprusoff and Iginla, then I might be on board  ;)

I'd prefer to deal with Calgary, because of having better luck for the Leafs when we trade with them, Gilmour, Phaneuf/Aulie, we tend to come out on top with trades involving Calgary.

We are kind of at the point where a goalie could put us over the top, got a young team with potential, kind of like the late 90's, could it be next year, if we get Luongo/Kipper, we finally get what we have been waiting for? Playoffs?

I could see it happening! Especially if we land a top 6 forward to help lighten the load and play with Kessel/Lupul, MacArthur/Grabo/Kulemin line re-emerges. Lots of things need to fall into place, but it can happen and I am going to predict it will, 4th place finish in the east next season! Conference Finals! GO LEAFS GO

I like the idea of putting in an offer sheet to Schneider. That way Vancouver will have to match it (I doubt they would let him go) and in so doing they would be obligating themselves to trade Luongo because they could not then afford both.

I realize BB does not act this way but it really is in the Leafs' best interests to do so -- unless we can get Tampa to do it for us and take the wrath of Gillis.

Making an offer sheet to Schneider would royally tick off Gillis especially if it's way more money than he planned to spend on him and has to match.  What are the chances he'll then trade Luongo to the team that screwed his salary cap?

Agreed, that is why I suggested that Tampa could do the dirty work for us.
