Who are the Leafs better than?

I remember the days when you could lohttp://tmlfans.ca/community/Themes/whitebox_20g/images/bbc/right.gifok at a teams won-lost record and go "Yep, that's a bad hockey team".

You still can. The difference is really that advanced stats can now help you figure out how bad they really are and whether or not they're likely to remain as bad as their record indicates relative to the rest of the league.

Yeah, but sometimes it's nice just to sit back and watch life play out.

The Leafs are 29th and still haven't hit their post January "fall off the cliff" phase.  I'm liking the chances at 30th this year.

And they're only 29th because they're played one less game than Columbus. They have the least ROW in the league.

The other usual suspects for this years bottom-5 (Arizona, Carolina, New Jersey) are all banking points now too. They'll come back to earth but their good starts will help the Leafs quest for a lottery pick.

I'm maintaining my prediction they'll finish outside of the bottom 5. I think we'll see some wins start to pile up soon that will derail the notion that this team will remain at the bottom of the standings all season. Of course, if the wins start coming, there is no telling whether or not management will pull the plug at the deadline to help insure a bottom 5 finish. Lets hope this is indeed the year we finally get the number one pick overall at the draft, but I have some serious doubts about that happening.

The only silver lining for this season for me.  It would mark a turning point and the start of an era of hope.

Won't surprise me if they pull off five wins in a row. All teams have ups and downs. But they're currently dead last and the season is already 15% complete. A few wins might pull them up to 28th place. Not that I'm wishing for it, but as I said before, one injury to Kadri, JvR, or Rielly, and there's no hope at all.

With every loss, the Leafs being a bottom 5 team becomes more and more of a certainty. Right now, just to get the .500 mark - which is roughly what they'd need to just barely crawl out of the bottom 5 - they'd need to play at a .543 clip. That would be a pretty stark improvement from how the team has performed. It's an uphill battle already, and the Leafs really don't look like they have the horsepower to make it.

Aren't they all lottery picks these days?

Actually I really like what I have seen so far, enough losses to ensure a great draft pick, but a good uptempo game, lots of compete, Kadri and Rielly playing really well, goaltending flat but that helps with the losses, even though Riemer may resurrect himself somewhat. The thing and we said it all before the season started, we wanted to see effort game in and game out and that has happened for the most part.
I know none of want to see the Carlyle/Horachuck horror show of last year.  Probably my most despondant time as a Leaf fan.
Lots to look forward to when the youngsters start filtering up next year.  I feel we are exactly where we should be in the rebuild process.

Right, I meant better/best lottery pick. Anyway, if anyone wants to start obsessing over that early head over here: http://nhllotterysimulator.com/#/

I agree with this largely.  I knew this season was going to be hard pressed for wins - all I wanted was for them to be in as many games as possible - and really, other than the Detroit and Pittsburgh games, they have been.
