Game Notes

DET
?Howard (9-6-4, 2.77 GAA, .920 Sv%) will likely start for the Wings
?Detroit is doing slightly better than expected this season, as they're only 3 points behind Montreal for the final wild card spot in the East. Lots of competition for that spot though and I wouldn't be putting my money on them
?Tyler Bertuzzi is serving a 2-game suspension for sucker-punching a player while he was still on the Wings bench. Runs in the extended family, I guess
?Every teams star is having a career year it seems this season and Dylan Larkin is no different. He isn't quite in PPG land but he still leads the team with 24 points in 28 games

WNA
?Andersen (16-7-0, 2.32 GAA, .931 Sv%) will likely start for the Nylanders
?Our glorious son William Nylander will be making his season debut tonight
?The team didn't practice yesterday, so no word on who Willy will be playing with. I'm guessing he goes right back to the Matthews line. It's possible he starts with Kadri so the top-6 isn't disrupted, or maybe Kapanen takes Marleau's spot on the Matthews line

Injuries

?Trevor Daley - Lower Body - Questionable Thursday
?Danny DeKeyser - Hand - Injured Reserve
?Darren Helm - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
?Anthony Mantha - Hand - Injured Reserve

Mantha is out due to getting into his second career fight (defending a teammate) and breaking enough of his hand that it required surgery.

It being a home game, and Matthews still getting back up to speed, I'm thinking the lines will be:

Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Marleau - Kadri - Kapanen
Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Ennis - Lindholm - Brown

If you need a reminder of just how dominant Nylander can be, especially in the neutral zone, I suggest reading that article.

I just looked at the Leafs goal differential -- +29

And we add 29 tonight.

+29

These are the exact lines I want to see. No Goat and no Kapanen or Johnsson on the 4th line. LW, RW and C distributed perfectly. I think Kadri/Kappi is a good duo. I know Bab's considers great pairs a line so Kadri/Kapi is an awesome third line.

Leafs don't have another back-to-back until Dec. 22/23 (when Detroit will be the 2nd game of the B2B) so this seems like good timing for a Sparks appearance.

I agree.  When Matthews was out, the Kadri-Kappy pairing was very effective.  Putting Kappy on his wrong side up with Matthews and Nylander won't make as much of a difference as putting him with Kadri to help with the transition plays.

I'm not sure it matters much if one flips Marleau and Johnsson.  Rock-Matthews-Nylander would probably be a good line. And I have a lot of confidence in Kadri-Kappy as a match-up duo.

I'd love to find a way to get Kadri up to 18 minutes of ice time though.  A shift or two a period of Kadri-Matthews-Nylander would always be fun.

Glad to see this.  One of my few remaining goals for the season is to get Andersson some rest.

I think I'd rather wind up 2nd or 3rd in the division with a rested Andersson for the playoffs than 1st and have him play 65 games this year.  Let's get the game count under 60 please.  (yeah, not gonna happen, eh?)

7th best player on the team though.

I don't know what's with everyone and these lines for tonight.  Nylander hasn't played at all yet, right?  So he's very well-rested, right?  Then there's no reason not to run with:

Marner - Tavares - Nylander
Kapanen - Kadri - Nylander
Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
          - Nylander -

The 4th line doesn't get much ice, and anyhow Nylander can just the possess the puck to himself for the duration of those shifts. 60:00 TOI is perfectly reasonable under these circumstances.  And it's not like he's doing it for free.
