Winnik Returns

I wonder what Winnik thinks.  He must know he's a candidate to be dealt again as literally everyone who saw him sign with the Leafs again thought: "Awesome, can be dealt for picks!"

Must not care about stability too much!

Or he loves the city he grew up in, gets to spend most of the season at 'home'; then at the end of the year, goes out on a 3-month business trip with a chance to win the Cup on a contender.

I wonder how many players might sign a deal like this to have an opportunity to be traded to a contender.  And I wonder how much the Leafs may use this as a selling point in signing those players.

With that group I'd probably just pick lines out of a hat before every game.

Right? Play tennis ball soccer before every game and the winning team gets to be the first line for the night.

But he has a 2 year deal! If he's dealt this year he's on that team next year too unless he's dealt again.

Treat it like goaltenders in a 1A/1B situation.  Win and you're in.  So the line that puts up the most points int he previous game gets to play the most minutes the next night.

That makes me think there's a handshake agreement in this deal that he doesn't get dealt until next season's deadline.

Except doesn't this all assume that Winnik has way more options than he probably did? I said the other day that Brad Richards or Justin Williams couldn't just be signed because you offered them a few hundred thousand more than a contender but someone like Winnik? Richards has probably earned over 50 million in his career. Williams is probably up near 30. As best as I can tell, Winnik is at around 8. So this deal is the equvialent of 50% of his career earnings. If the Leafs offered him a few hundred thousand more or guaranteed a second year when other teams wouldn't...maybe he just took it and figured he'd play wherever?

A quick poke around his Twitter suggested he might be on the cusp of getting married too, so the 2nd year was probably the clincher. The opportunity to be a player leader as well as playing for Mike Babcock sounded like it was part of the appeal as well.

Right or, again, they just made him the best offer.

Right. All part of the best offer package.
