Winnik traded to Pittsburgh

Hard to say one way or the other. We don't know who will be on the team then, what they'll be making, or what the salary cap will be.

Still not a risk worth taking. If all they're really looking for is someone to eat minutes, there's tons of guys they can sign to cheaper and shorter contracts. If you're signing a contract like Franson's likely to end up with, you're bringing that guy in with the expectation he'll be a significant contributor when the team has started to turn things around.

Yeah, it doesn't seem as though eating minutes is really going to be a concern for the team next year. Assuming Rielly and Gardiner are back you've already got two guys who play more than twenty minutes a night. Increase that by even a minute or two and you've got most of what you need.

Our defence still seems pretty set at this point for next season:

Gardiner-x
Rielly-Polak
Percy-Robidas
Erixon

That "x" could easily be filled internally, either by Phaneuf who might not be traded or by bringing in another Marlie/cheap UFA and moving Polak up a spot.

I think Polak's actually a pretty good candidate to be dealt. They might wait until the deadline but he'll be a pending UFA next year and I think there's less stink on him than on some others.

Polak might get us a 2nd round pick, I would deal him in a second.  Franson is not on my list of returnee's, however if they can get him for a reasonable deal over 3 years could be interesting.

Oh yeah there's pretty much 0 chance he finishes next year as a Leaf, but I think they'll wait until the deadline.

That probably makes the most sense just in terms of a return for him but I wonder if this is an off-season where the Leafs are making a lot of deals, as I think a lot of people hope, if Polak doesn't get thrown into a larger deal to make it work as a legitimately valuable piece.

Why he is awful at defense! They have enough offense back there. Polak is IMO 10 times better at that position.

I concur, I'd take Polak over Franson 10 out of 10 times when considering defensive work alone.  Polak is not too shabby either, when he takes a chance offensively.  He just hasn't got Franson's accuracy from the point.

Ya but we aready traded Frason, its time to throw some more meat off this ship and get some more picks.

The more 2015 picks the better!  We need to get as many prospects developing in our system as possible!
