I changed my mind. Hayley dove.

So the only American player falls, leaving Wickenheiser alone on a breakaway in OT at the Gold medal game, and Wickenheiser's plan is to dive and pretend to be tripped... so she can possibly be awarded the same penalty shot. Yep, sounds like a sound plan...

The American player's skate clipped Wickenheiser.  There's no way she dives there with a chance to win the gold.  You get clipped while in stride you're going down.

Here's a super slo-mo where you actually see the American's leg hit Wickenheiser:

Notice how contact is made and Hayley keeps skating? DIVE.

Hayley felt contact and went down to draw the penalty.

What she would have expected to draw was a penalty shot, the exact same thing she had if she didn't dive, as you say.

Despite those that say she fell on purpose, I don't buy it. I think the clip made her lose her balance and the momentum she had kept her going for a few strides(essentially one step to try and regain her balance).

You could see on the play that she was exhausted....a light wind may of blown her over.

Ummm no.  What you lose in that super slo-motion GIF is that Haley's stride changes as a result of the skate clip.  She brings her leg forward too much and loses her balance and goes does. That's not  "continuing to skate".

After the contact is made with her left leg Wickenheiser doesn't take another complete stride with her left skate. If that's your definition of "continues to skate" you must have loved the figure skating this week.

Except she wouldn't have been completely exhausted and chased down while she took the shot?

Why would she risk it? For all she knew the US player was just as gassed. She wasn't being checked, there wasn't anything in her path, why risk diving and having no penalty called at all? Not to mention the fact that, as has been mentioned, her skate was hit and she fell naturally anyway.

From: http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/was-womens-gold-medal-match-botched-by-ref-kerry-fraser-says-no-but-feels-game-needs-two-ref-system/

Former NHL referee Kerry Fraser on the takedown of Wickenheiser by Knight:

Hilary Knight?s cross-checking penalty at 7:31 of OT
Hayley Wickenheiser was in the clear with no player to pass but the goalkeeper, in possession and control of the puck and as a result of leg to skate contact initiated by Hilary Knight (albeit unintentional, perhaps) was taken down from behind. There was no alternative for the referee but to call a penalty. While it may have appeared to the referee, as she chased the play from behind, that a shove/cross-check was delivered, the ref?s first impression demonstrated by the start of a ?tripping signal? was accurate. Tripping was the call. Since Knight had not gained a position to the side of Wickenheiser, the foul took place from behind. As such, the most correct, by the book call would have been a penalty shot. I can understand and appreciate the referee?s decision to assess a minor penalty in this situation.

So Kerry Fraser can understand and appreciate a referee not wanting to make a controversial call in overtime?
