World Cup rosters being announced

Team Overlooked?  Set up a young GM who gets to pick a team of players who didn't get selected by their National team and they can try and make their home country look foolish for not selecting them.

I like that idea but I do want to take a minute to echo the M vs. W podcast and say that easily the worst decision of the tournament is that Kyle Dubas isn't running the under-23 team.

Supposedly they aren't going to send any(?) KHL players to this World Cup but they might starting at the next one.

The Czech team has a couple of KHLers announced. One with NHL ties, the other doesn't. I'm a little surprised that they've opened it up to them, since this is primarily a NHL, not IIHF, event.

Are those guys under KHL contracts beyond this season?

I'll let you know when someone builds a Russian GeneralFanager ;)

No Subban? Yes Vlasic? No Perry, yes Getzlaf?

It's tough to criticize these rosters since they obviously don't include everyone who will actually be on the team. I'm surprised that they were that committed to both Carter and Getzlaf. Both would probably be on the team but naming them before Giroux and Hall? Hall is easily the 2nd best Canadian left-winger, easily a top-5 left winger on the planet. That should have been an easy one.

Vlasic's the more questionable one to me. He'd be in tough to make my final team, let alone the initial one. Doughty-Keith-Weber-Subban-Giordano would be the locks. Other 3 spots down to Pietrangelo, Brodie, Burns, Letang, and Vlasic.

Somebody mentioned this on Deadspin but Team USA is probably really hurt by the U-23 team. Jones, Eichel and Larkin all probably would have made the big team.

Lounge's 'reaction' at his omission from the Team Canada roster:

Strombone ‎  @strombone1
Is there a team Canada over 35 I can sign up for anywhere?Kidding aside those r 3 great and well deserving goalies. Canada in great hands

Subban, Perry, Giroux, Duchene, Burns, Seabrook,Kessel, Klingsberg, Jagr...some of the names omitted from their respective country's rosters for the World Cup of Hockey 2016 edition.  Here's some chatter on the subject:

Phil Kessel has to wait to find out if he plays for the United States at the World Cup of Hockey, and P.K. Subban will have to remain in a holding pattern on getting the call about representing Canada.

There?s still time for them to be added as each team must fill out its 23-man roster by June 1.

It?s not just Phil Kessel," general manager Dean Lombardi said, noting that forward Bobby Ryan and defenceman Justin Faulk also didn?t make the first cut. "It?s imperative that we get this right."

Subban was a glaring omission given his risk-and-reward style. Subban played sparingly in Sochi, and Armstrong mentioned that Babcock likes predictability and having players he can put on the ice in all situations.

We're going to have really tough decisions on what we want," Armstrong said. "We have to separate 16 candies out of the barrel. We're going to add seven more at the end. Right now, Corey Perry is a great player, and when we do name our 23, we're going to go to the World Cup of Hockey as a group of 23, not 16 and an additional seven.

Sweden left the Stars' John Klingberg off its first roster, but could add him to one of the deepest blue lines in the tournament. The Czech Republic left off Jaromir Jagr, but mainly because so that the 44-year-old could have until June 1 to decide whether he wants to play.

"Even I as a fan looking at the rosters go, 'Woah, look at this," commissioner Gary Bettman said. "People are going to now start speculating and debating and discussing. Today it becomes real."

I'm thinking the final lineup will include:

Hall - Giroux - Perry

  Subban - Burns

I see a pretty decent argument for Thornton though.
