2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

The offseason isn't over on July 4.
Free agency basically is. This isn't like a lot of years where there are really solid middle 6 forwards who are going to sit around until August to get a contract. Any upgrades to the team are going to cost assets through trades now. That's all I'm getting at

I guess you could point to the fact that all the Leafs' bigger additions that weren't returning players were acquired via trade and there's more time for trades.

Stolarz aside, I kind of prefer Treliving’s trade history to his UFA signing history.

It’s a pretty terrible UFA crop to be involved in.

Soooooo what's going on with Nicky Bobby?
It's a curious one. Like I really don't see any way of him coming back. I also think we (myself included) often don't see him as being particularly valuable but he's got back to back season of 14-15 goals, and that's in limited games/minutes/PP time. Over the past two seasons combined he's 15th in the league in 5-on-5 goals per 60 minutes. Surely that'd mean something to someone out there.

He just seems like another one of those players the Leafs will send on down the road and he'll be the next Carter Verhaege.

We have too many of these for one lineup: little crafty lefty with a big weakness of being near non-factors without the puck

Domi: centre-capable, nasty sauce, stupid brain, only useful after April
Robertson: wicked shot, tunnel vision, falls a lot
Maccelli: nasty sauce, perimetery tendencies

Upcoming: Cowan, who is more of a generalist skill-wise, adept at chaining plays within contact, needs seasoning.

Final 32 Thoughts Podcast of the season
Leafs-related: (copy/paste from iOS transcription, with spelling edits by me, or summary)
  • “I think [the Marner stuff] just became too much of a distraction. I had a player tell me this week that it was just that when the trade deadline was done and they thought it was all over and then the next day comes out the report from us that they asked for Marner to be traded and he said no to Carolina”
  • Leafs Front Office are seeing the benefits of success by committee on the Defense (no Hedman-esque person) and in Goal; why not up front too? Still have Matthews and Nylander
  • 3 or 4 teams were in on Maccelli
  • Friedman thinks the Leafs are in on Jack Roslovic, who has USNTDP history with Auston Matthews, who appears to be willing to wait for the Leafs to move bodies out
  • “I heard a story not too long ago, about two years ago, when the regime change happened, the new group comes into Toronto, led by Brad Treliving, and they start meeting with all the players just to get to know them, to talk to them. OK, what's the vibe like? What's your sense of where the team is at?

And one of the players, a forward who was like a depth role at the time, had just said, like, we don't feel like we've got any role here. Like, we're not truly part of it.”

Waiting to move players out eh? They have plenty of room now.
Which begs the question: what are they saving space for? And if it’s holding up a potential RH C/W with scoring and speed, what higher priority could that be? Or is it just trying to maximize the return on the cast offs?

I'd guess they've had talks with the Rangers about Zibanejad.
