2025-26 General Trades & Signings

Eh.....they added Miller and Ehlers to a team that finished 3 points behind the Leafs in the standings. I get that you are on an anti-Marner campaign but the Leafs are a much worse team right now than last year.

It doesn’t even have much to do with Marner; Carolina is not destined for success with the way they play. Regular season cardio merchants.

And my anti-Marner stance is like 3+ years old now; I don’t think it’s all that related.

I think every team, certainly every team in the East, is going into this season expecting that one way or another they'll need to beat Florida in order to win the Cup. So I do think that if you look at that move through that specific lens it's maybe not a game changer. For as good of a player as I think Ehlers is that Canes obviously have to do some soul searching in how they play as a team if they want to beat the best version of the Panthers.

They don't match up well with Florida...but they didn't before Ehlers either. They were never going to be able to change that with this mediocre offseason. Where I might disagree is that Carolina's play style couldn't still beat the Leafs. Florida is obviously the favourite to win again seeing as everyone took multi-million dollar discounts to stay but the cumulative age is eventually going to catch up to their style of play. Bobrovsky is also close to turning 37. I don't think it was a terrible investment to be the team that has the best chance to come out of the Metro division again and hope that Florida just runs out of steam in the next 1-2 years.

I'm fully on board with the argument that the Leafs were the best team that Florida faced in the playoffs. I'm not as convinced that they don't find a way to lose Carolina or Edmonton if they had gotten past the Panthers.

6 years, $8.5mil AAV. Pretty solid contract. Ehlers there always just seemed to make a ton of sense.

Carolina did have a few losses on defense - Orlov and Burns (not sure how good they were last year). And Jordan Staal continues to age.

I'd think there are better ways of getting there than this deal, but maybe they're gambling that he'll be a good flip at the deadline.
This is such a weird year. The cap went up by a decent amount but the free agency pool (including quality RFAs) wasn't great.

Vegas is under the cap (once Pietrangelo goes on LTIR)
Montreal is well under the cap (once Price goes on LTIR)
Florida is probably going to have Tkachuk go on LTIR to get under the cap...or trade Evan Rodrigues

Right now those are the only teams that are above the salary cap. The Jets and Ducks are the only team with fewer than 20 players (19 each) under contract. The Ducks are the only team that is currently below the salary cap floor of 70.6M (66.5M)

The majority of the league is going to have cap space to play with this year. 3M for Jeff Skinner doesn't seem unreasonable. It's easily tradeable even without retaining.

I don't feel strongly about it, but the guy only had 29 points and was scratched a bit in Edmonton last year...that doesn't scream $3m to me.

Like if Tre signed him to that deal, I wouldn't be pleased.
