Kaprizov resets market with new deal

That's Wild. Their next highest cap hit is Brock Faber, at 50% of Kaprizov next season.

386 pts in 319 GP vs 442 pts in 342 GP for Auston Matthews in that same time span (just to comp in a familiar top end player with injury history), with significantly less offensive insulation down the roster and as a winger. He's good enough to put Minnesota in the mushy middle so they won't have easy access to big ticket picks, but will now eat up so much cap they'll have difficulty elevating the roster through the market significantly enough to truly compete.

Feels like a pretty big poison pill.

For once, it's not the Leafs going off the charts. 17.80% of next season's projected cap. That's tough to build around. I think the Leafs know from experience this won't work. Depth scoring... forget about it. A united team, forget about it. Meaningful roles for everyone, forget about it. Enjoy the spectacle and don't expect results.

You're being sarcastic right? Kaprizov is going to make 17M next season. McD is making at least 2M more then that.

No, I think McDavid cares more about winning than maximizing his earning potential. I think he'll take less than he could possibly get (like he did on his last contract) to be able to have a more competitive team behind him.

He may take less then he could make but I don't see him taking less then Kaprizov.
